I'll try to make a long story short. Well... my mighty Cummins (HO) got beat off the line at an intersection yesturday by a Ram 1500 gasser |(. Mind you, he had a standard cab, 2wd, with no cap on the bed (I figure I had 2000 lbs on him).

I was able to keep up with him, but lost ground waiting for turbo boost. There was only about 750 feet of lane to work with so I let him go(one of those controlled intersections where two lanes become one shortly after the light).

From what I have read here, it looks like a first step is getting rid of the muffler and going straight piped. I'm considering the Muffler Eliminator from Geno's Garage, to help on the exhaust side of the equation.

Of those who have one, what do you think?

Of those who thought about one but didn't buy, why did decide against it?

Can a chain muffler shop do the same for similar money?

Try your local muffler shop like Meineke or Midas. I have had alot of luck having them do odd jobs like muffler removals for next to nothing. They have plenty of the pipe and the specialsde tools like expanders to install straight pipes. They removed both mufflers on a friends Mustang and replaced them with straight pipes for 40 bucks. That was parts and labor.

OR, you could do what *I* did, and install a Power Shot 2000 propane injection setup, and knock a couple of seconds off yer 0-60 times - then blow the gassers away... #ad

If you install the M. E. kit from Genos just cut the muffler off. It will make the job a lot easier and will take 20 minutes instead of hours. I noticed a small difference in spoolup and power, but I am still not sure the noise is worth it.

The local independant muffler shop just removed everything and replaced it with OEM type coated pipe for $45. 00 including reinstalling the correct hanger.

Whatever you do don't go to Scheid's Diesel Service if you are ever in the midwest, talk about a ripoff. I seen Geno's muffler eliminator and called Scheid's to see if they had the same thing. They said they didn't but could replace the muffler with a 3" pipe. I took my truck to them and waited 2 1/2 hours for them to complete the job. When I got the bill it was for $274. 00, I almost had a heart attack. I didn't say anything to them because everything else for these trucks is outrages in price. But asking around I could have had the same thing done for $48. 00. Call me a fool but I wont be burnt again by them. I like the sound, it is loud, and I got about a. 5 mile to the gallon increase in milage. On a trip to Pennsylvania I got 24. 5 miles to the gallon (that's going the speedlimit).

Just how "loud" are these trucks w/o the muffler? Twice as loud? I understand they sound pretty much the same as stock when at idle, and it's not until you start revving them up that you notice. Is that true?

Greg,

The only time it sounds loud "is" when you get on it. I've cruised by troopers, county and city police and they didn't even turn their head. So far I haven't met any going up any inclines (the highest thing we have in illinois is the overpasses).
