seeing my fuel pressure has been dropping over the past year and my pump was leaking I ordered one of geno's pumps. very well built and much heavier/rugged then the oem. wasn't too bad of a install other then the nut closest to the firewall.

the pump comes with a piece of paper WARNING not to install the pump without the factory spacer or engine damage would result. well, my engine didn't have a spacer! whats up with that?? I almost didn't install it because of the warning. but because the pump I took off didn't have one I installed it anyway. I think genos should let costomers know not all engines have spacers and if it dosnt its ok to install.

new pump produces 5-5. 5psi at idle and can drag it down to 4 psi wot. this is with a new fuel filter at time of pump install.

I'm sure they do their best with the instructions and tech support. You should probably call them to explain what you found out and possibly get more explanation behind the spacer.

On any mechanical 5. 9 OTHER than a '94-'98 12 valve RAM application a spacer is required. On a RAM the bracket holding the screen / fuel heater combo that mounts behind the transfer pump is the spacer. Same thickness.

I am not very familiar with the RAM 1st Gen set up, but maybe it's the same deal.

I must be missing some thing as well , i dont renember seeing any spacer on any 89 to 93 5. 9 or have any trouble removeing or getting at the lift pump bolts/nuts

I am away from my books today but I do not recall a spacer on the earlier pre-P7100 5. 9 engines that use the transfer pump with the priming lever on the side. Waiting to see what he was working on.

the upgraded pump has a different lever then the original. it wraps around and connects on both sides unlike the oem just attaching on the firewall side. makes it impossible to get a socket on it. its a beeotch getting your hand back there! Im going to call them.

When I replaced my OEM lift pump I used a Cummins 1st Gen piston style lift pump. This pumps internal spring is weaker, by design, than the 2nd Gen LP and is self regulated to a max of 15 psi. It requires a spacer between the LP and the engine. This might be the spacer they are talking about.

I'm in the beginning phases of switching a CTD from a 92 D350, to a 92 W350.. Was thinking of going from the mechanical pickup pump to an electric pump.. I'm running pretty much stock right now, but I am toying with the idea of a turbo upgrade and injector upgrade.. Nothing to radical mind ya.. Anyone have any advice??

There is another option if you decide to stay with a mechanical lift pump. You can check out The Hungry Diesel website. They have piston style lift pumps for 1st gens in 3 different pressures. They are probably cheaper than Cummins

unless you go crazy with upgrades you really don't need to up grade the pump, I'm running a HE351 turbo, +40hp injectors, a BD fuel pin and 3200 rpm gov. spring. and I still had a stock type lift pump.

Thanks for that info. I am not going wild..

Only Thing ive been toying with the idea is one of those Tank sumps if its needed or not??? Also im curious if any one has used the Aluminum fuel line thats avalible , how ever im stil thinking about the steel braded fuel lines as well

I used the aluminum fuel line on RV generator, the stuff works good as long as you can do what you need to in one straight length with out any joints. the way I had to run wine it had 3 joints in it add I had issues with leaking air in at the joints and not staying primed I ended up taking back out and putting rubber line back in.

I remember the day when 24V owners would have done anything to be able to put a mechanical pump on their Cummins engines without having to put a custom cam in and such. Cummins has a piston style pump for VE 12 valves. Just make sure you get the proper inlet pressure and not a P7100 lift pump...as it's pretty high on pressure.

If memory serves me the P7100 lift pump puts out 30psi which is twice the max psi for the VE IP. I've run a piston style lift pump for about 8 years without any issues and it puts out a max of 15 psi. You can find piston style lift pumps in 3 different pressures with a max psi of 15. Try this web site.
