Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Lousy cold start

Just got back from a trip up to Iowa to rebuild my transmission at Georend Brothers Transmission. 19 hours, 32 minutes, 12 sec one way. Wow, what a haul just to build a transmission.

I cannot say enough good stuff about Dave. He is unbelievable when it comes to those trannies.

I tore mine apart with him running back and forth (head phones on helping other people) and offering advice.

His hired help is equally impressive... Greg, Nubby, etc.

Anyone looking for a great transmission and a great company to build their transmission, this is the place.

I was there Monday Oct.17

Did you have the 18? He said someone was comming Tuesday to rebuild his own trans. I drove 900 miles each way from Pennsylvania. I guess I am not the only nut my wife says. :-laf

Wow, you rebuilt the transmission in his shop? Thats cool! Do you have any prior transmission rebuilding experience? I would love to be able to do mine myself, but don't have the experience with anything like this, so I'll have someone else do it...

I'm still undecided between Dave Goerend or Jeff Garmon, both are reasonable. Probably Jeff, I am close to his shop and he can do everything, I just wait till he's done. :D

Did you get the triple disc or single?

No, I have no prior training on the transmission.

Honestly, I just wanted to go ride four-wheelers with some guys in Wiscnsin and decided to drive up and rebuild the transmission during the same week.

Once I determined I was riding, I started talking to Dave. I told him I wanted to save some cash, could I come up there and do most the work myself. He said, "sure come on up". He then sent me a detailed book on my transmission, etc for me to look at before I came up.

I showed up and he cleared me off my on little section and said, "tear it apart and put those pieces there and these pieces here". I did that. Boy, tearing that sucker down was a piece of cake.

Cleaned up everything and got ready for reassembly.

Finally, got to the valve body. He said he would show me how to do but it would take me a couple extra days doing the upgrade. OR, he could rebuild it for me.

I opted for Dave to do it.

Also, Craig did most of the transmission reassembly. I was a monkey wrench hander outer.

Dave was great. Walked by ever so often and made sure I was doing everything right. He has a lot of patience. Never once did I feel like I was being a pest.

Dyno'd the new transmission and I was out the door. Of course, I had to pay. :D

Oh, I went with the single disc. That was pretty cool watching them cut mine open, weld all the fins, balanceing, reassembling, etc. I just don't pull anything but my four-wheelers, therefore, I just went with the upgraded single.

That is awesome, I doubt many folks would do anything like that(allow it in their shop). Did you happen to take any pictures? :D

I've talked to Dave on the phone, he seems like a great guy to deal with. The single disc would probably be fine for most folks. I am considering going with one, this is a simple work truck after all- will not be raced, and I don't tow much weight. I don't plan on extreme bombs...

You know, I may have taken a couple of pics. I can't remember what I took pics of and didn't. I had a jam packed week.

I just got the transmission put back in today. Let me tell you, it is like night and day. Unbelievable the difference from the old to the rebuild.

I am still going to have to check the TPS tomorrow. I know it still needs adjusting, cleaning, or replacing. I just have to find out in the morning.

Until then... .

I also can not say enough about Dave and his crew. What a pleasure to deal with and what an awesome transmission. I only live about 160 miles away but, after the experience I had I would drive from Alaska to have him build my transmission.

If you do happen to have any pics, would you mind emailing them to me? john_galt27 AT yahoo DOT com

I had a condition several years back that was a combination of a bad TPS and a brake light switch out of adjustment. Replaced the TPS and was still having TCC issues under some, but not all, of the conditions that I had before. There is a plunger on the brake light switch. Push the pedal in, and using needle nose pliers, pull the plunger out. Let the pedal go. Sometimes if the pedal catches on my foot as I'm getting in or out, it will pull the pedal up, knocking the switch out of adjustment. It doesn't happen often, but that's what I do before I even bother with the TPS. Hope it helps.

This dang truck is getting to me. I guess for $700 I shouldnt complain, however, I have noticed that when I fix something, something else is hiding behind the shadows.

I am somewhat mechanically challenged and then again not.

I just got under the hood and noticed that I don't even have a Fuel Shut-off selenoid. I have had to get out and manually cut her off and never paid attention to the actual FSS. I guess I am going to have to definitely order one now. Also, there is no mounting bracket for the TPS. Can I order this from Cummins along with the TPS?

I have noticed that since my transmission install, my brake light comes on and sometimes the ABS light(may have happened before the install). I have reset the brake switch under the pedal just like the directions in the service manual suggest. Only thing changed was that my brake lights went off instead of staying on when I put her in park and shut her off. It also makes my braking very difficult when I stop and put her in reverse (sometimes). Pull forward and all is good. Sometimes she won't crank in park and I have to put it in neutral to crank. She fires right up then. Any suggestions. I hate being a newby in the diesel world. Give me a polaris atv and I am good to go.

I know I have a great truck just this little stuff is starting to get to me. Anyone interested in taking her off my hands? :D

-You bought the truck for 700? Wow! Was it in pieces or something?

-FSS. I'd just use a cable if I were you. ;) You could probably find one cheaper on ebay... or just try LarryB, www.fostertruck.com

-TPS mounting bracket. Hmm... dunno(maybe find a TDR member that has converted auto to manual, get theirs?). You don't have a TPS mounted right now?

-Brake light? You mean dash warning brake light, or actual brake lights on the back of the truck?

Sorry I can't help with the other problems, but being only a few hours away, I could pick up the truck Saturday morning, and save you a trip to the salvage yard. ;) :D

Oops, I got ahead of myself.

I do not have a FSS mounting bracket. I am going to go get my engine serial # for Cummins and order one from them. I guess that is the best thing to do??

Yeah, I bought the truck for $700 but it needed a new transmission. Got the brand new Georend's and the truck runs like a top. I couldnt be happier with the truck. I just wish I could get these little things taken care.

You are correct in the dash brake warning light. Sometimes, if I hit my brakes it comes on. Sometimes when I park it is still on. I just reach down and pull up hard on the brake pedal. It is either luck or I am good cause it goes off everytime. Maybe it would anyway if I just waited longer.

Before the transmission (of no coincidence), my brake lights would stay on so I adjusted the brake switch under the pedal. Reset it and now the brake lights go off like they are suppose to.

Come on by and take her off my hands. I am wanting a 2nd generation 4wd. :D

Georend Trans

I have 50k plus on my Georend Trans. These guys are incredible on cust. service. They met me halfway and loaned me a vehicle while they did warranty adjustments. (no charge). I wish we all did biz the way these guys do.

The trans works great. I'm runnin' 320 hp. I tow heavy equip and plow commercially. Now I just have to keep my foot out of it so I don't roast the tires.

I just put a TC and VB in the 04 about 2 weeks ago. Wow, what a difference. I told Dave what I was doing with the truck, and he told me what I needed, and sent me the parts. Great customer service, and the trans shifts like it ought to in the first place. Now I need to update my sig. :D

Jim

I also just had a TC (single disc) installed in my '05.

Dave spent about 45+ minutes on the phones with me, over how a TC works and everything.

He suggested that just a TC would be fine for my application (stock HP).

I wanted to get rid of the 2800+ rpm stall speed of the stock unit.

Dave's is a cool 1800-2000 rpm, not low, not too high, just right ! :)

And the rpm's actually drop during shifts now !

It almost feels like driving a standard (except a lot quicker off the line). Awesome !! Oo.

Just ordered a new Georend Bros Trans.

I just ordered a new trans from Dave. I went with him because of the incredible reputation he has here on TDR and his excellent customer service skills (the price was also very reasonable).

I ordered the trans and a triple t/c. I don't do much towing, but figured I couldn't beat the warranty!

I will be having it installed at the end of this week by a local trans shop. Dave even offered to give them a call and discuss the installation!

I am glad to hear everyone has been having good success with these transmissions, I can't wait to drive my truck again!

2001 QC HO 4x4 with very few mods... so far
