Ok, got the Air Silencer removed and my fuel mileage improved. I didnt notice that much difference in the sound since I had eliminated the muffler and had a K & N Air Filter previously.

Bombs away!!

Ok, now tell me how to get rid of the Cat. Am I required to purchase a Banks system? Or is there a less expensive way? What does a Banks cost and approximate installation cost?

What can I expect after I eliminate just the Cat and then what would be the difference between the Cat and installing the Banks system.

Is there more than one Banks System for my 12 valve auto? Is there a better exhaust system on the market?

I did mine for 28. 00, I cut the cat off and remove the muffler. I the had a piece of 3" pipe cut to length I needed(6' or so), expanded on each end. Slipped it over the pipe that went into the cat and over the pipe for the tail pipe assembly. Clamped it down , that was it. It sounds awsome, kind of loud when you hammer on it #ad

. Sounds like a big rig with straight pipes. The turbo whistle thru the exhaust is a sweet sound.

A Banks system doesn't get rid of the cat. I replaced mine with straight pipe from NAPA. They carry all sizes of pipe, reducers, couplings & clamps to do what ever you want. It cost about $15 each to replace my two.

Go to your local Dodge Dealer and order part #52019170AB. It is a section of 4" pipe flared down on one end to 3". It fits in place of the cat perfectly. Costs about $45.

All you have to do is remove all the clamps on either side of the cat and, due to all the heavy crimping from the morons who assemble the damn thing, hammer the living hell out of the system until you pull the cat from the system. Then stand the thing up, use a garden hose and squirt water into it to prevent the soot from blowing in your face. Take a big, long prybar and a shot-filled hammer (or an air chisel if you have one) and hammer away at the innards of the cat until you break it up enough to knock it all out the 4" side. Prepare to hammer for about an hour. Re-assemble the thing and it still looks like it has a cat on it, but smells and performs so much better.

I gutted mine which took all of 10-15 minutes. The REAL job was getting the damn thing off the pipe.

Once off, get a spade or auger drill bit, 1/2"-7/8 or so,with an extension if possible, and drill a bunch of holes right down the middle and at angles, thru the ceramic inside, in the same direction and intake and outlet the exhuast gases go. It falls out like broken ceramic in minutes. . No or little pounding with a hammer. #ad

I know theyre a sponsor and all... . but spend your money elsewhere other than Banks! Good products, but too little, for too much!

I have to agree about the Banks stuff. It's top quality, but way overpriced for what you get. I bought my 3. 5 inch muffler and tailpipe when they first came out and paid dearly.

Lessons in life, they never end.

I did the Dodge CAT test pipe. Don't you just love the names. #ad
I was carrying mine across the parking lot of the muffler shop & the owner comes out, folds his arms, S eating grins & says, "Now what are you doing!" I had just had him put in a 4", 45 degree mandrel bend to route the pipe straight out the back. #ad
He put on the test pipe, no receipt, cash only. #ad

Where there is a will, there is a way. He is a fellow dieseler.

Quicker spool up, less egt, more of that keen turbo whine. By the way, you can hear the turbo whine real well going down the hwy. The wife was driving it & I was on the Wing. Now that WILL bring a #ad
to your face.

stanman:

I did what "Big E" and "Forrest"
did with the "Dodge CAT Test Pipe. "
The cost on mine was about $38. 00.
As "Forrest" told you, "quicker
spool up and lower EGT'S. " The
first "run" I made after putting
the "test pipe" on produced the
most unbelievable amount of smoke
you can imagine!!!!

My converter was clogged so bad
it looked like "Kingsford" Charcoal
Briquets falling on the ground when
we cut it apart!!!!

Anyway, good luck!!

OK, had the cat taken off today, now catless. Put a straight pipe on. Am I imagining the boost that I felt, WOW. You gotta love it.

I was afraid the exhaust would be to loud with a straight pipe so I went for a glass pack that you can see thru. Very happy with it. Fuel milage improved, better response and I like the sound. Cost installed $110. Kittys under the work bench where she belongs.

My cat is still on. Pulled out the intestines though. Run a pipe through it. Weld it back up. Looks legal too me. Remember some dealers check for that stuff when time to trade. Keep the kitty just incase.

OK guys!!!! After reading this, its going to cause me some work this weekend. I have been putting this off long enough, it is going to happen. And with doing the work myself, I would be willing to give up my lunch money allowance to get rid of that kitty. Maybe we could come up with another book, one that I really enjoy '101 uses for a dead(removed) cat'!!!! What do you think???

I didnt pull my cat out yet, but I got the clamps loose, and I'm lucky enough to be one of the few that didnt have someone tighten the hell out of the clamps and crush the pipe during assy. I could almost spin the cat in place.
If I was able to get the clamp off the muffler, I could have slid it out.
FYI I soaked the hell out of the clamps for a few weeks with Kroil. Good stuff.
I only did this last week, so I think that is a good endorsement of this product.
Also, I get a dealer discount, and I didnt get it as cheap as John_p got his. Mine was $44. 00 I think.

Bought the piece Big E recommended from Dodge has anyone else used this and can I just slide this on by moving the muffler back or do you have to remove the muffler??
