Well it was making too much noise in 5th for me to trust it on any trip out of town.

I've torn onto it and found that the teeth on 4th and the counter shaft were messed up along with the 3-4 fork being worn 1/2 way though. I have the input shaft and the main gear cluster out. I can't seem to get the counter shaft out, the little cover is off along with the snap ring. The manual did not say you had to support the gears unlike an old post I just read.

Any ideas?

TIA for help with my PITA

i had to wail on mine pretty good for a long while before i could even tell it was moving. i didn't support any gears or anything when i did it. good luck!

Thanks, I thought I might have bound it up. So it really is a classic case of what my Dad used to call, "Don't force it, get a bigger hammer. "

Swankmetal, thanks for the good luck wish.

I guess this will be me today. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Why can't the manual say? "You may have to beat on the mother flower for a while before it comes out" instead of ". . tap the countershaft towards the front of the case with a brass punch and slide it out with the front bearing still on the shaft. " It makes me feel like the guys who wrote it are tip toeing around in tutus, while I drag my knuckles everywhere I go.

you ever see pictures of those guys? like on the back of a chiltons manual, or something. if i ever had to drag my truck to a shop, and saw the likes of them, i'd find a different shop. even if the tow truck was gone and i had to push or something.

Easy as 1,2,3

Well, after wailing on the shaft for a long time, I brought it to a shop with a big press. The guy said after about 10,000 pounds it let go with a bang. Tap it out, yeah right! Just a FYI the countershaft has a step to it so it can only go out the front, eventhough the bearings, the front one hides the step, at each end are the same size. Now all I have to do is put it together and put it on the truck, just like in the manual, easy.
