My uncle has a 91 1 ton dodge (work truck) that recently has had trouble getting stuck inbetween or in gear. They have to pull the shifter out and manually using a bar or rod get things lined back up to get it to work again. It has quite a few miles on it, not sure how many though.

What would be the best thing to do?

Rebuild Getrag transmission?? How much money and are these transmission's decent enought to justifiy rebuilding it?

Swap in a NV4500 if possible? What is needed to do this? Direct drop in replacement or very involved?

Thanks!

Sounds like the problem I have in one of my trannies. I got by for 6mo by being VERY squar and correct in my shifting, esp from 2 to 3, and from 5th to 4th. It seemed to hang in those gears when coming out of them. A new top sounds in order. I have no idea what they cost, but if you can find a good transmission (good luck), take the top and shifter out of it and put it in the current one. And, while you have the transmission out, reshim it. With used bearings, you want zero preload. There have been some good threads with good info lately.

Personally, I dont think the NV4500 is worth the cost of swapping. The ones I have drien were harder to shift than the Getrag- gates WAYY too close (I went from 2nd to 5th several times), and from what 1stGen4evr and mysterman say, the NV4500 doesnt have any better internals than the Getrag.

Keep the oil level up, dont run it with a load under about 1700rpm, and it will last a long time.
