Hey guys, what is the "normal" recomended miles to change the fluid on the getrag? TIA, Mike

------------------
92 Std cab. LE. 98,000, 5-speed, 3. 54, 105 gal Aux tank in bed. Banks Power pack. 14cm w/wastegate. Pyro & boost guage, oil temp guage. Rebuilt pump turned up, fresh injectors. E-brake. Used as a Hotshot/express Reg. at 36,000 lbs in 48 states. http://hometown. aol.com/hotshothauler/myhomepage/business.html

The normal recomendation is 18,000 miles. I change mine at 18,000 miles using a 5W30 synthetic. The transmission shifts smother in all gears with synthetic. I have just recently installed a trans temperature gauge and am now breaking in a rebuilt Getrag. It failed due to the pilot bushing wearing out. I am looking into changing over the bushing to a bearing.

Bob, thanks for the info. I'll change mine at 12,000 miles as mine is a pulling machine. I may go your route on the syn oil. Anything I can do to avoid spending another $ 3200. 00 for another transmission. Thanks again, Mike

Interestingly, the '93 service manual says the Getrag does not need periodic changing, even for severe service, like the NV4500 for '93 does. It is good to know that the transmission was designed to go without service but for $20. 00 (4 quarts of 5-30 synthetic motor oil) or less every 18,000 why risk it.

The service recomendation comes from "Check Chart" - a company that digs out this information from records of all auto makers. Since you are "hauling" with your truck I would consider this as Severe Service. The additive package in this transmissions fluid was long gone when it failed.
You said you paid $3200 for a new transmission - I hope this included installation. I just did mine and the transmission cost me $1595 the clutch, pressure plate, resurfacing the flywheel $390 and new U joints a new center carrier bearing and driveline ballance $180 for a total of $2195 but I did all the R&R work myself.

Bob, this was a factory recon unit from Dodge. They were on national B/O and i bought in in Alabama. ONE "nice" thing it had the upgraded shifter. Instead of the straight shifter, it curves to the left and I like it much better than the orig. one. Best regards, Mike

I have a 93 3500 with little over 100k miles and I have never changed transmission oil. I have bearing noise at low speed but I just down shift or push clutch in. I have no problems other than brakes. We are leaving June 15 for a 6k trip. I guess I should change transmission oil & defferential grease before I leave? Is it O. K. to use synthetic oil in transmission with this much mileage on it??
Thanks, Norm

Hi Drifter Norm
You should be OK with the synthetic. I would look at the transmission to check for leaks. Synthetics will find a leak easier the convential oils but their ability to withstand heat is is much better than conventional oils. I also use Synthetics in my rear diff and have for over 100,000 miles. Just make sure you use 2 bottles of Trac-loc additive in the rear diff. when you change it.
