Well, I pulled it apart, and no visible damage... . What gives? It won't stay in third or fifth, and there's a lot of slack between 5th gear and the bearing. And it's making noise like an animal when it gets hot. Is the internal shaft bearings gone? And anyone got a schematic on these ... ... . I pulled the tailhousing, and the bearings look good in the races, no spun races, shims intact..... WTH?!?!

HHhuntitall, I got a spare '91. 5 360 GETRAG, ifn ya need one. Ya just have to come up to Colorado, pull it and take it home. We can work out a trade or something if you are interested. Its in good shape, not pulled hard, mostly lubricated with synthetic and overfilled. Let me know. Its here and sittin' waitin fer something to do:D! GregH

Sweet, thank you!! That's just what I needed. I've got an early service manual, but it says the G360 can't be serviced, and has to be treated as an assembly... ... Maybe now I can find this cat that's got it's tail in there!!

GHarm, thanks, I don't need this one right now, I was just going to fix it and stash it in a corner!! I DO appreciate the offer!! I swapped this truck to a NV4500 recently, but this transmission's been in the corner in time-out!! I've been cleaning my shop, trying to get all the little projects done to get to the big one in the back!! I've debated on getting it running and just put it in 4 low and drive out!! That'll get my shopped cleaned out!!! ... ... 'course, I may need to tie a D7 Dozer to it to get it out..... I suspected this transmission to have been visibly trashed when I pulled the top, so now it's decision time as to whether to venture further or just put the top back on and move on... ... .

HHhuntitall, Good enough! At least you're not sittin', dead in the water without an alternative! I'd love to do an NV-4500 on New Ugly:cool:. Maybe some day:D! GregH

Sound could be mainshaft bearings. Did you check those?

As for the rest, did you check synchros closely? How about all the teeth for signs of damage?

Mainshaft bearings, as in the ones in the case front and back? Yes, I checked both, and both show some wear, but both have smooth rollers and the races look good..... the synchros show a little wear, as well, but all the teeth are there and pointed as should be..... I've moved it to the back of the list, as I had to mount a set of tires this morn, sold a Dynatrac hub kit, another set of tires, and now I've got a '98 I traded for that needs an exhaust manifold and front axle actuator..... and a whole lotta Mr. Clean (with hair). I'm gonna set it on my workbench where the transfer case I finished this weekend has been for the last year and 9 months... :D God help me! Hopefully, the transmission's a little taller, and it'll get in my way more, so I'll pull it apart and fix it for a spare for the '85/92 Crew. From looking at the FSM posted above, I'm gonna say the internal bearings are out under 5th and 3rd, and just haven't come all apart, yet. Maybe it's still usable..... and maybe it'll make a good core to go to Blumenthal's!!

Did I mention it will barely turn by hand, but once you take the top off and pull forks out, it turns really easy? WTH?
