I am trying to find out where would be the best place to buy either a used or rebuilt Getrag for a 1990 4x4 5 speed. It so happens that my old truck I sold this past spring had the transmission gone out of it yesterday. The guy I sold it to is a friend of mine and I am trying to help him out. Are there any of these left to buy by different people/businesses or are these getting obsolete? Do they make rebuild kits for these and are they any good if they do? If someone might know where to check to buy these please post or send me a PM or e-mail. Thanks

THere are outfits that rebuild Getrags, do a good job for a decent price, and there are outfits that do cruddy work and charge outrageous prices. A lot of guys are going with the NV4500, kit and transmission costs about the same as a Getrag rebuild, and with some kits, there is no need to shorten the driveline on a 4x4. I'll see if I can find a Getrag, though they are few and far between. Tall your buddy to not lug the transmission if you go the reman route, and keep it overfilled by a quart.

Getrag

If you are any kind of mechanic at all, you can rebuild the transmission yourself. Standard in Texas has a good reputation on parts and Mantran in Tallahasse Fla is where I have bought parts as well as Southern transmissions out of Atlanta. Standard and Man-tran are both on the net. I am sure there are others. Stick with domestic parts and bearings. I have a India input shaft that I won't install because I just don't like the looks of it.

Have you opened the transmission. It may need less than you think.

PM if you like and I will go into greater detail.

I would be especially interested in what has failed.

Some of the people I was talking to said the one shaft is obsolete now whether that is true or not I am not sure but I know one thing they sure don't like high HP he's better off getting an NV4500 depending on what he's planning on doing with the truck.

My son had his rebuilt locally, but we had to turn the transmission shop on to one of the suppliers listed in the TDR "links" section to get the parts.

He said his source didn't list Getrag parts or kits.

And I have the manual in a .pdf file if you need it.

Send an e-mail to me at

Thanks guys, I appreciate all of your willingness to help out. I will pass all of this information on to him and see what happens. Some of you I may be in contact with later on. I will try and find out too what is was that broke as to give ya ll a heads up or just FYI. Once again, THANK YOU.

UPDATE: transmission is out of the truck and we pulled the shifting forks out. The very first gear, ( would be the first one right behind the bell housing ) is or has 4 teeth in a row missing and then there is another tooth missing like 4 teeth over from the ones that are broke. I am guessing that was 4th gear, but just a guess. We found another trans cheap and are in the process of going over it before the install. No hurry to get it done, spare time as it is not needed for now. Any comments? I can probably get pics the next time we work on it.

I would also be interested in knowing what happened to it. I dont know if I can offer much help on the matter but I will try.
