Is the howling noise the Getrag can make in 5th gear constant? I mean, does it come and go/get louder at certain speeds? My truck has a noise like this, but I don't know if it's coming from the transmission and 'echoing' in the cab, or it is from the exhaust (pipe is broken off just behind the cab). The noise comes on around 60 MPH and goes away above 65.

My diff made a constant howling sound before it went that I attributed to the "gutbag". Dont know how many miles are on each component, but danas seem to go at about 200-250k, and trannies-who knows? I wouldnt absolutely condemn the transmission if your diff has not been rebuilt.

Went for a drive to get lunch. The sound is not the Getrag, it occurs when the engine is at a certain RPM/load only. I can make it happen in other gears, but I just never noticed it before, I do most of my driving on the highway in 5th gear.
So, I'll just ignore it and turn the radio up a bit :)

I get a little "harmonic howling" at certain speeds... .

There's lots of stuff turning round and round... . sometimes if the frequencies are close but not identical it can cause that...

sounds like a twin engine boat whose engines are a few rpm different... . at least that's how I think of it.

The radio..... yup... it solves the issue... Or go faster!

:D
