Well the other day, Thursday, my 1990 D250 4x2 CTD service truck and daily driver broke down. I do not have 2nd or 3rd gear any more. The transmission has been rebuilt before but its time for a change. Well here is my question. Who has swapped out the "Getrag" for a NV4500 with success. Any info or comments would be helpful. I need to get the truck running again soon. :confused:
 
JApplegate swapped his Getrag for a NV4500, and loves it. I personally am not that impressed with the NV4500s I've driven to shell out the cash to convert. Plus, I have had no trouble with the Getrag, but I watch the oil religiously (my ONLY religious act :-laf), and do my dangedest NOT TO LUG IT.



Set up of bearing preload is EVERYTHING!! If the rebuilder put the same shims back in, and got them too tight, even by a couple thousandths, it will destroy stuff. But, if you lost 2nd and 3rd, it sounds like something in your top cover has gone awry.



If you decide to go with the NV4500, there are members who will take the Getrag off your hands ;)

Unusual for sure. Daniel could certainly be right. Were there any severe noises when it failed?



I am not all that impressed with the 4500 either.
