While I was checking the truck over before a trip recently, I found the trans oil was low. Instead of just filling it, I thought it was a good time to change it. The manual says you don't need to but...

I changed it with Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic and filled it with one quart extra thru the shifter. Took about 5 qts. It really made a difference - now it shifts smoother and is quieter. I wouldn't have said the trans was noisy at all before, but it is quieter now. With the Cummins rattlin' up there, it was hard to notice any transmission noise. :) So far, at 127K, my Getrag seems happy (crossing fingers).

So, if you have any minor noise you think is from the trans or if it isn't shifting as easily as in the past, you might try changing the oil and put off of laying out the cash for an NV4500 until you have to.

I'm with you, I don't have a problem with my Getrag, and when it goes I'll probably fix it or get another one.

I bought my 93 about 6 mos. ago and the first thing I did when I got it home was drain the transmission and put Red Line MTL in , made a big difference , smoother shift.

I talked to the guy at Red line last week and he recomended 2 qts. MTL and 2 qts. MT90 to thicken it up a little, I also poured in an extra qt. in the shifter.

While I was under there I changed the transfer case lube to Red Line 75-140 NS , seems to be quieter and I haven't heard the shifter rattle as much.
