Eric, my owner's manual calls for 5W30 synthetic. I use Mobil 1, and overfill by one quart. Takes 5 quarts total.

FWIW - Since there is no magnet in the plug, I like to change the oil right after driving a while to help drain out any particles while they're suspended, instead of allowing them to settle. The reason I say this is because I have a Fast Cooler window on my trans, so I can see the particles in there!:)

Ill pipe in on a product I like allot redline MTL is gret stuff I have a suped up saab turbo 2 litre hitting about 250 HP the traneys are notoriously weak even at the stock 160 HP expected to live like 150Kmi & realy dont like to be driven too hard I built the trans in my saab almost 3 years ago & have over 30Kmi on it & no probs at all others at my HP levels are replacing/rebuilding traneys every 2 years

it has been well documented that redline synth can increase traney life up to 100%

regular oil changes even with synth are nesessary

some like royal purple I have heard good things about this stuff as well as amsoil but I like the redline products I heard they came out with a new oil designed specificaly for problem traneys

my 2 cents

Will 5 qts go in through the plug, or will I have to pull it sideways on a mountain? :D

I have a small hand pump for the oil that was origanally for changing oil in an outboard lower unit. Will this work/help?

I've heard of pulling out the shifter, but I was told that two people are really needed, I dont have a spare person. :D

And finally, will putting in 5 qts start leaks in the output, and input shaft seals?

This truck has 154K miles, and I dont think the trans was ever done.

Eric, I have an auto and have never worked on a Getrag, so take what I say with a grain of salt. ;)

I've read posts here before suggesting to replace the plug with a 90 deg. fitting, a short piece of pipe, and a cap. That's supposed to elevate the fill hole high enough to accommodate the extra quart.

Mike

the stick is VERRY easy to get out of a getrag Id pull the stick it does not require 2 people I promise

add a qt after filling to the hole

leave the fill plug out pour oil into the trans glancing under the truck when you get around 4 QTS when it starts to spill install the fill plug & add one more :)

have fun

Yes, the top bolt on the PTO is the most common method. Also you can get some clear plastic tubing from the aquarium store that will fit the end of the oil bottle and it works good.

Eric, I prefer pulling the shifter to get the extra oil in. I do it like JStoll described. It really is simple. The only trick is getting the snap ring back in. I sit on the console, put down pressure (with my chest) on the shifter to compress the spring, then put the snap ring in. Either big snap ring pliers or thin needle nose pliers will work. The first time was tricky, just figuring out the best method, but it's very simple now. Definitely does not require a second person. Guess I'm too impatient to squirt the oil in from below with a squirt can. :) You can dump the oil in quickly from the top.

As far as leaks, mine leaked slightly before I started overfilling, and it hasn't gotten any worse, whatever that's worth. You should notice easier shifting, and smoother operation of the trans in general. At least I did.

BTW, with my window, I can tell you the level ends up a little below the top bolt of the driver's side PTO cover with 5 qts.

Eric,

Yes the hand pump from the kit for your outboard lower unit will work, but it's designed to screw onto the smaller opening found on gear oil and conventional motor oil. Mobil 1 synthetic I have only found to come in a big mouth opening. Next transmission service Im thinking about pouring my Mobil 1 sythetic into a cleaned out empty quart of conventional oil say Castrol. Then put my lower unit pump on it and pump it thru the top bolt of the PTO cover.

I think I'm the only one on the entire TDR with ATF in the Getrag. Seems to work for me... many say this transmission should have died by now... . almost 180k on ATF alone. Thinking about switching to 5w-30 in the summer... . as for filling, like some have mentioned, I also pull the shifter. I used to park on a side hill to add the extra quart until I heard about taking out the shifter. Just my two cents... ...

I did it this afternoon. I got a 90 deg streel elbow, a two inch nipple, and a cap.

I probibally spilled about a pint. The weather wasnt so cooperative, so I was in a bit of a rush.

I didnt take it out yet other than moving it from the driveway to the street.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'll pull the shifter next time. :D

Getrag extra quart?

I have a 1992 D350 with the Getrag. This is the first I have heard the recommendation to add an extra quart. I have been running Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic. What is the reason/benefit for the extra quart?

Thanks,

Tim

philip was kind enough to explain that part of the getrags problem is an oiling problem. adding a lil more oil gets the level up a lil so perticularly the front bearing (one of the problem parts) as well as the rear bearing & the one between the input & output gets more oil keeping them cooler & lasting longer

take care

JAK

I just refilled mine with a quart over with mobile one 5w-30. I pulled out the shifter. It's not that hard, but I did have to have an extra hand to get the snap ring back in. The extra quart is crucial.
