My wife complains that my shifter is too far away. Mine sits in line with the right edge of the radio in 1st, center of the raised rib edge of the dash in 3rd, and right of the rib in 5th. Is this where yours are? I wonder if mine was bent at some time. TIA,

Well I went out and looked. That is about where mine is (93 club cab). Open the ash tray and you will see that it couldn't be much closer to the left. If your wife is petit or medium then I am sure it is a bit far for her.

If you installed a 4500 the shift tower is located back on the transmission top and puts the shifter in a better spot. With my six one frame, it isn't a problem but I would like to have the shifter closer. Not so bad that I would go to the trouble to bend the stick however.

I have reshaped the position on other installations with good success. It IS your truck and if you wanted it over, do it. Don't forget the ash tray or perhaps screw it shut (I don't smoke and neither does any one else in my truck) and relocate the cell phone adapter port (aka cigarette lighter port) to a better spot.

My transfer case is lowered 2 inches. It put's the shifter alot closaer to you. :-laf Creeper gear is almost into the seat. Makes it nice to drive.

i would like mine to be alittle more shifter friendly, seems like with 5th gear its way over and even at almost 6'2 i have to stretch of course the seat is all the way back also for my legs to have room under the dash.

i know my shifter knob has worked loose and isn't exaclty where it should be, it is still the factory leather looking one that kinda looks like a teardrop, its black with no numbers, is there a way to fix that, when its straight it's loose and i can't stand that loose when im shifting gears... .

Most every floor shift I have owned gets bent to be comfortable for me, including my Getrags. A torch, along with wet rag an pan of water to keep other things from getting too hot, is about all thats needed.

Just out of reach... that's a good thing. Means the clutch will last much longer. ;)

I noticed that, too

I took out the shifter assembly from my 91 and bent it down low to make it more user- friendly. Think I will do the same in my 92. Right now, it has so much slack in the shifter, I darned near have to reach over to the glove box to get it into 5th. I think I will fire up the torch when I do the transmission swap, and bring the stick over and down a little. Make it look more like the NV4500s- coming straight out of the shifter boot toward the driver instead of coming 1/3 of the way up and bending over like the 93s did.

On a previously owned truck of mine, thats what I did. Torch it slow (will burn some of the paint off, but thats fixable) and be careful not to go too fast when bending it, so you dont bust it off.

I had a friend fabricate an extention for my shifter and it is positioned just right for my 6 feet. It does transmit a great deal of noise from the trans and that is annoying. It also looses the positive feel you have with the factory shifter. I think that bending the shaft is the best way to go.

It's not too bad for me, but I have long arms.

James, I never thought about the ashtray, it's out anyway. Someday I might put it back.

I might bend it a little, I'll have to look it over some more. Thanks for the input guys. :)

One more thing. when bending the shifter, since it is hollow, dont heat it any more than absolutely necessary, as mine swelled right at the point of heating. I guess too fast/ much heat casued the tube to fall down, so to speak. I'm going to put my next one in a vice in the same position as when I am driving the truck, and will apply steady pressure to the tube as I heat it. That way, I wont have to worry about overheating it.

Wow, all that to make the shifter in a 14year old pickup look good
