How in the heck do you get the blocker ring, little springs, balls, the other piece, and the synchro assembly piece together?? Members of the Getrag Preservation Society know what I'm referring to..... I've got them greased up real good so as to help keep them sticky and together, but how does one compress all three springs to slide the synchro assembly over them?

Get a helper, and 3 little pocket flat screwdrivers (Dieselman359 knows EXACTLY what I'm talking about). Get one started, then another, and the 3rd, WITHOUT losing any of your prior starts. Took us 45min on the 1st one; 15 on the second. I have some extra detent balls if you lose yours in the shop.

The spring goes in the inner holder first, then the ball on top of it. We used some type of tackey red grease, and it helped.

Hmmm, I've only got two hands, and I put them in all by myself. It is possible to do one at a time. The trick is to not slip the ring all the way on, just far enough to retain the one you put together first, then move to the next, then the 3rd, then fully slide it together. I wish I had one apart here, so I could hold the parts in my hands. I was sure the ball goes in first, then the spring, compress it and slide it in far enough for the inner ring to hold the spring.

OK, so while I'm rambling, remind me, does the ball go against the shift fork ring? I put together and take apart so much different stuff anymore, I can't remember exactly how its setup... . I do know I worked from the inside. Heck, maybe mine's put together wrong... ... ...

Michael

Ball goes outside the spring, i. e. if you set stuff up on the inside ring, spring first. Chris, get out yer digital camera and snap us some pics.

Ha, ha, ha, ha

Oh, I have to laugh when I think of how much of a PITA that this can be. Now Bill, I done had the SOB all put together, oiled-up and ready to go and you had to go and take it apart.

Here is how I did the last one, I can't remember which piece I laid down first, I think that it was the ring, then like Daniel said, grease up the springs, and balls, insert the springs and one by one place the ball over the spring, hopefully it'll somewhat stick, push it in with your little screwdriver and push it over the tab on the ring. Ha, after re-reading that it sounds MUCH easier than it really is. :{ Don't worry, after you have all of the balls sling-shot out into the most remote hiding place that they could find you'll get better.

Hey, new idea this year for SOP, 1/2 syncro reassembly timed races. :-laf They'd probably hear us cussin' in the next county. :-laf

Oh the joy of working on your own stuff:mad::-laf. Thanks for the help guys, looks like I was doing it right, just wasn't trying hard enough. I'll try it again this weekend.

Oh me! :eek: I've got to do mine soon, I was trying to find someone to do the internals for me, I was only going to R&R the transmission and put in my new clutch, can't find anyone who wants to fool with it... :{

I love it.

The witness marks will show how it goes back together. Been too long (more than a day) since I did my last one.

Neccessity is a mother as they say and she is the only help I had. One person with two hands can get it back together. Probably there is some sort of jig that will allow you to just slam it to gether. Before I got mine back together, I was thinking about building something to help.

It is completely possible to disassemble the transmission without removing that collar.

Load it up, bring it to SE Iowa, and I'll help you do it. . or else take it to Georgia, or Missouri. One of us would be glad to help you out... ... I was out to a family members house last week, and they reported thier old 91 was making noise from the trans. They have removed it from trailer duty, and normal choring activities until I can get it in my garage. Guess maybe then I'll take pictures. When its in my garage, maybe I'll have to put a good old super trailer puller tune on the pump...

Michael

Saaaweeet!:-laf ROTFLMAO!!!

I'd put up $35, just to have Ms Daniel Puckett as a memeber here!!!! I'm certain she'd keep us in line... ... ... . Make sure and say hello for us Daniel. :D

Michael

To clarify- SHE works at a GENERAL repair shop; transmission shop is down the road a piece.

I bet she'd keep us in line, lol. :-laf Watch your language, Michael- wife is a 4- letter word

I was thinking about borrowing the big two jar puller and bearing separator from my bro in law, and or I've heard that Chris Hughes has them now, take it up to SOP this fall and we could tear down and completely rebuild a getrag in a day?? The puller and separator would save hours by not having to cut the bearings off. By then I'll be a member of the GPS and there will be more than a few members that could help. Maybe we can put some more scratches on Philips new flatbed:-laf.

As far as the balls, DP and Miss 'Eye Candy' DP, I'm pretty sure she keeps them in a pickle jar on the mantle:-laf!

Wow, we'd better be good, or she'll make all of us black and blue this October.:-laf

I suppose a Getrag could be overhauled in a day. Better bring extra bearings. I was just thinking a few days ago though, that the two years I've been there no real wrenching has went on. Before I came to SOP I read about KDP's being killed, gauge installs, and all sorts of stuff... ... ... ... .

Just remember Daniel, having a wife ain't so bad. At least now I don't have to wonder who I'm spending Saturday night with. And at least if she decides not to be my wife anymore, I'll know where 1/2 my stuff is going. :-laf

Michael

Michael, 1/2 your stuff? Being really optimistic, aren't you? :-laf

I fixed my exhaust pipe! It was beat off by Jeremy's driveway! :D

I was trying to do timing at SOP, it's not my fault I was misled on the correct adapter for the pump. (I've corrected that problem for this year! ;))

A friend on mine and myself worked on them for a long time before we had it mostly figured out te-installing them. They are a major PITA, but it is doo-able.

I said half my stuff, you know the stuff I had before I met her..... I did not say anything about the stuff we have aquired since then. Actually I'd hope for my tools, my trucks, and my trailer, and of course time with the kids too. Then again, I'm just going to carry on and try and keep mine resonably happy, thus we won't have to worry about splitting things up. :-laf

Now, back on topic, get your balls in the right place yet, Bill?
