Yeah, after 175,000 she just started acting up and is now just about DOA. 2nd,3rd,&4th are just working in a different transmission now, at least they don't act like they are in mine :-{} Anyhow, now it is time for the NV4500 thing, any pointers? I think that I am going to go with standard transmission's kit, it looks like a good deal. For those that have done this conversion, what are they talking about with the floorboard "modification"? Any ideas are appreciated :)

Thanks,

Russell

You will have to cut out a section of floorboard as the NV4500HD shift tower sits back 5 inches further than the Getrag did. I was worried about this part before I did mine but it was not a problem. I got my kit from Quad 4X4 in Roberts MT and they had a template and video that came with the kit. The finished product looks like it belongs there and always did. You will be amazed at how much quieter the NV4500HD is. Just make sure that Standards kit includes their fully splined 5th gear. Good luck and have fun - I did. :)

Happy trails

Bob

Thanks for the good words guys! According to their website they have taken care of the fifth gear problem, and the thing is ready for action. I cannot wait for a transmission that shifts like one, I'll let you know how it works.

Oh... . what clutch are you guys running? Other small expenditure to address too

Thanks,

Russell

Russell,

Mine still has the stock clutch at 175K miles. At the time I did the transmission swap, the clutch was in good shape so left it alone. Same with the drive shaft. But you will end up with a larger hole in the floor and a shifter in a different position that you are used to.

After an attempt at a local clutch I decided on a South Bend clutch. Save yourself some extra work and call Peter at SB clutch he will steer you in the right direction. I've got their Con-O in mine and it is one sweet clutch. I've got their direct number (219-256-5064) but their web site should have an 800 number to call.

Happy trails

Bob:)

Consider it a Blessing.....

Hey Russell!:)

I know it sucks to have to lay our some serious $$$ for a new transmission..... But, you'll be tickled w/ the new NVG when you get it in!

I'm with Brother "Bob B" and his recomendations: Check w/ Dan @ Quad 4X4 for the kit & floor template. dan@quad4x4.com

I went with a dealer purchased Brand New NVG4500HD because a Standard Transmission fully splined main shaft wasn't and option because of timing. The Deal Purchased trans has an unlimited mileage (1) year warranty and the Manufacture's latest Band-Aid fixes for the 5th gear retention problem. No troubles yet! It's still doesn't have the fully splined main shaft though.

SBC has two different (maybe more) clutched that works well for our trucks. Peter or Woody have the "CON" series of linings in either the Sachs (13") unit or their hybrid Luk/Valeo (12 1/4") kit. I went w/ the hybrid kit for drivability reasons and have been very happy w/ it. Ask questions... have an open mind..... and choose the best clutch for your needs.

SBC won't steer you wrong!

Thanks again for the insight guys! I am going to call both South Bend Clutch and Standard Transmission today, and get ready for wallet damage :D Another quick greenhorn question... . does the bell housing on our trucks require shimming? If so, how have you guys attacked that job?

Thanks,

Russell

P. S. KEENO, this is your fault of course... . you got me to put the 12cm^2 housing on the hairdryer, and the day after finally getting the lock collar of the max fuel screw and tinkering, my getrag goes. :D :p Just kidding as always :)

Hey Russell!:)

I'm glad I could be of assistance! Haven't been feeling much love lately! :):D:) You know it's all a conspiracy?... . Don't Cha Know!

I truely sorry to hear about the cash out-lay..... You'll be happy when complete though. The NVG makes a First Gen shift like a 7000# sports car! :D

Do some careful shopping when you decide on a conversion kit... . The Advanded Adapters kit has a very flimsy crossmember support. I think it was "Crewcabdiesel" that had a problem just a few weeks ago. Do you remember that posting?

Have fun..... Have you done the Dana 70 yet? I can't remember if you had. After that your drivetrain will be BOMB-proof for another 200,000.

KEENO:D

DOH! I just ordered the advanced adaptors kit. Weelll, I guess I'll just be making whatever mods might need doing when I get it.

I also went with the South Bend Clutch Con. 0 clutch and can't wait to get this thing together :D

Dana 70? Yeah, I have one, what needs attention there

Russell

Hey Russell!

Didn't mean to scare you..... The Dana 70's often need a rebuild as they approach 200,000. A quick check can be made for 'Backlash" using a dial indicator on the ring. THe cover has to be removed but it's an easy check.

The spec from the manual for backlash is 0. 006 to 0. 008.

Have a great weekend.....

Watch out for the trans mount with advance adapters. Mine broke, the transmission case cracked and lost the oil. It cost 1600 to rebuild after the train wreck. I made my own mount out of 2"x2" angle iron it is twice as strong as the flimsy mount they gave me.

Thanks Phil.

Since I have not seen this part yet, is it possiable to reinforce it in anyway, or will I just be making my own unit?

I'm guessing that I'll have all of the junk by the middle of next week, and if the weather works out, I might get to yank out the getrash tomorrow :)

Thanks guys,

Russell

About the only thing that you can use the mount they supply for is a template. The one they sent me was made out 1/8 or 3/16 mild steel. They just cannot stand the abuse of the allmighty Cummins. I would not use anything lighter than 1/4" plus angle Iron or channel iron is alot stronger than rolled sheet steel.
