life of transmission?

I need to replace the getrag 5spd transmission in my trick which is a 4x4. Can I get a transmission out of a 2wd & put my transfer case on it without to much trouble?:(

No, I don't think so. The cases are the same, and you can swap the tailpieces, but the output shafts are different. It is splined on the 4x4, but the 2wd also has a threaded section on the end of the shaft for the nut that holds the yoke on. Not sure if the splines are even the same - I've worked on both, but not side by side...

If they are, you could have the threaded part machined off, but you'd have to tear it down. If you tore both down, you can swap shafts, too, but I don't think there's an easy way out.

Well, it isn't a straight swap.

As Andy noted above, the output shafts are different... and certainly there's a different tailhousing as well... but if you have all the guts from the 2WD transmission, you should be able to rebuild them onto the 4WD mainshaft. This is just as much work as rebuilding the stock transmission, but you won't need much in the way of extra parts, assuming your 2WD parts are within spec.

How comfortable are you with transmission work? From leafing through the Getrag docs, the rebuild looks easier than most, but any transmission rebuild is gonna take some time.
