While cruising down the road, I lost all gears but 4th. I pulled the shifter today and found the big spring that sits under the lever to be busted. Anybody seen this before? Looks like the top cover has to come off to replace the spring. I need to put the shifter back on and see if The gears will work if I pull up on the shifter (mimic the spring). Wondering how this spring could break like it did, it's stout and all it does it hold pressure against the shifter. If you've experienced this, I'd like to hear from you.

If you are talking about the spring that holds the shift lever tight against the shift rails, the cover does not have to come off the trans to replace it. It is a pain to replace but has to be done with the trans in the truck. As far as having seen one broken - I have never seen one break.

PS If memory serves me the G360 shift lever is bolted to a stub that actually holds the spring in place but I still think it is easier to remove and re-install the spring with the trans in the vehicle.

I think this is true i think a snap ring holds it in place but its been 8 years since i looked at the boat anchor i had

I can't make the spring come up through the cover. The spring is sort of cone shaped, and the larger diameter base will not fit throu the smaller opening. It is very stiff, and I can't distort it enough to pry it out of there. Anyhow, I suppose the transmission must come out, as there is probably more work needed than just replacing this spring. I couldn't determine that the spring does much more than prevent the stick from rattling.

I suspect I might have broken shift forks. Local rebuild quote is $3500:eek:
Not sure what to do yet besides begin tearing it apart... .
