On my way home from a trip last month I suddenly started hearing a whistle. I stopped to check my hoses (I've blown them off before) and couldn't find anything, so I drove on.



I'm getting a pretty good whistle starting a 8psi, getting louder with boost. I thought my boost gauge might be leaking, so I took the tube off the manifold and plugged it, but I still had the whistle.



I tried taking off my BHAF and ran it down the road and still had the whistle, so it's past the turbo.



I tried presurizing the intake system by blowing an air gun wrapped in shop rags in the turbo intake tube. I couldn't get it to pressurize. . Probably an intake and exhaust valve were open in one of the cylinders.



Is there a way I can presurize the intake to find the sound? Otherwise I'll have to stick my friend under the hood while I go down the road at full throttle to make some boost! :D



Any other common places for leaks?



I think I'm making a hair less boost than I used to. . I'm getting about 36 now. . Used to get about 38.

I had a bolt in the manifold that holds the injector line clips (blue plastic ones) come out one time. (*Somebody* must have left it loose when he installed bigger injectors. :rolleyes: Oh yeah, that would have been me!) Was easy to hear on the road, but not with the hood up - and I haven't figured out how to do both at the same time. I borrowed a slick tool with an air fitting that seals on the turbo intake side, but a crude one could be made from PVC and duct tape or the like. Regulate your compressor to 10 psi and let your ears lead you to the leak. You're on the right track - good luck.
 
I had a whistle develop in my old 1989 truck. I thought for a long time (over a year!) that it was because of the increased boost after I turned the pump up. After a gasoline fueling episode, I spilled some fuel on the engine during the injector line purging. After I got the truck started I discovered bubbles around an injector. I had had the injectors checked about a year and a half earlier. I tightened that injector and the noise was gone. A 24 valve engine doesn't have the injectors exposed, but you MIGHT have a head gasket leak or a small hole somewhere in the exhaust manifold.
 
Hmmm... Can see the ground? Doesn't seem right if it does go to the manifold, but my truck isn't here to look at. It's a metric bolt - maybe try the oil dipstick bracket bolt as a temporary test if you can't get a matching one from the coffee can in the garage!
 
Since Dave's Diesels, Angola, IN added the boost elbo if it ain't a whistlein' I ain'ta gettin no boost. Stock turbo, 31lbs and lots cooler EGT's MOST the time. Think I need more air.

There was some on ebay earlier today. The dip stick hold down bolt is the right size 10mm, but I don't think its long enough
 
I finally got time to run up to the hardware store. . For future reference, a M8 x 30 Standard Thread fits. Although the one I bought had a 13mm head instead of the 10 mm head the stock bolts have, it fit fine.



And best of all My whistle is GONE ! !
