Difference between pumps?

Second Dodge, First diesel

Please help. I have been looking everywhere I can think of and reading all I can to learn what to buy and what not to buy as far as guages, intake, exhaust, power module, etc. I am ready to buy. However, I can't find anyone here locally that seems to have a clue what they are talking about. I could probably do most of the work myself if I could find out what is the best to buy and then just get it online from one of the members here. Here are my questions.

My truck currently has a catalytic converter. Would I be ok buying an exhaust without one?

Do I need the EGT/Boost/transmission temp guages if the power module has them in it? Or is it better to go with the module without the guages and install them separately?

As far as Fuel pressure goes, some on the forum here have said "It has saved me" when it comes to the pressure guage. Saved from what? What is the proper recourse should pressure drop or spike?

I have probably made myself sound like an idiot. But, I am most times so it kind of works out. I know very little about diesels (if that isn't already apparent). But, have done lots of work on gas engines and have a pretty thorough knowledge of them.

Would anyone be willing to speak with me about this and give me a short tutorial. I have many more questions but my fingers are cramping.

I live in Boise. My phone number is (208)484-4099 my email is -- email address removed -- if anyone is willing to chat with me a bit.

Thanks in advance

Lonnie

It would help a whole lot if you would tell us what year, how many valves, type of transmission, gear ratio, and if it's a 2500 or 3500.

It would help if you filled in your sig. Beings your asking about modules I will guess that your truck is from 98. 5-04. 5. As far as trusting the gauges built into the modules I can't help you with that. Mine doesn't have any. The gauges you should really have are fuel pressure, egt, and boost. If you have an auto trans you should probably have a trans temp gauge too, especially if your towing things. Your truck doesn't really need a cat on it but your state may require it. Pa does but I still don't have one. The reason a fuel pressure gauge has "saved" some of these guys is because on the 98. 5-02 trucks the lift pump goes bad taking out the VP-44 and the VP costs a lot of money. If you catch it soon enough you can just change the lift pump for about $150. 00 instead of the VP which is more like $1200. 00. Fill in your profile though it'll make it a lot easier for us to help you out. As far as where to get the gauges from try www.isspro.com or www.genosgarage.com or www.dieseldynamics.com

Ok, you're right. A little more info would have been appropriate. My truck is an '02 (older body style) 2500. Automatic transmission (47RE) and 3. 55 gear ratio with anti spin differential. Other than the tires it is all stock.

As far as filling out my sig. What info should I include that was not included in the opening post?

Thanks gang! I appreciate all the help.

Just put in your sig, enough info to let us know what truck you have... . as a side note, I thought cat's only came on 2004. 5's.....

There should be a local TDR chapter in Boise. You may want to try to get a hold of them for some help.

Now we know what kind of truck you have.

What do you plan on doing with it (towing, off roading, racing, daily driver - just want a little more umph)?

There are a couple of threads in the 2nd gen sections (FAQ's) that you might want to peruse.

Gauges first and foremost. Boost, EGT, Fuel Pressure, and transmission (since you have an auto) -- $275 - $475. You can drop the boost, all it does is let you know if you have any boost leaks. You can go the expensive route and get some SPA, or Westach gauges to get two readings in the same gauge, $$$$$, then have up to 6 readings in a three gauge dash pod, or pillar mount.

Power mods... You won't be able to do a whole lot without having the transmission rebuilt (Suncoast, DTT, ATS -- $1500 - $5000). Maybe some 275 injectors -- $250 - $300 -- and and Edge EZ (or comparable box for 60hp) -- $350 - $500.

4" exhaust -- $300 - $900, and a new intake system (AFE, BHAF, Scotty II or III) -- $200 - $500. You say you have a truck with a cat on it (oval shaped, not a 2' long 6" round "mini muffler" looking thing - resonator), so it has to stay by federal law. I can not advise you to remove it, or take a large, long screwdriver and break out the innards and "gut it" prior to installing a new cat back/turbo back system. You can do what you want, it's your hiney on the line if you get caught.

Now, you can get a performance box with the gauges built into it (TST, Van Aiken (sp)), but the HP that it will make will bake your 47re transmission in short order.

Being an 02, you should still have warranty left on the truck. You start tweaking things (power mods) you just turned into your own warranty station.

If he has an 02, I'd say he is catless. They had cats on 94. 5 to 98.

Go to your User Control Panel and click on "edit profile. " Then you go to truck profile and signature and fill in the area for sigbnature- year, 3/4 or 1ton, 4x2/4x4, auto/manual (and 5or 6), cab, bed, etc, etc. SOme guys get real apecific, others say "air and fuel flow improvements" or something to that effect. But the more info you include, the fewer questions we have to ask if you are lost.

Get a second job to pay for it all :D :D :D ANd watch out for CB_Parker, he aint too far from you. ;)
