I just spent 2 hours here lokking for info on fuel and oil filters! So, for fuel, ther are 3 basicly; FS19579 newest, FS1268, and cold weather FS1261. Are they Fleetguard or Cummins? Which is the best? Nevada dosn't get near ZERO hardly anyway.

On the oil filters, The list; LF3894 Stratopore, LF3552 Microglas, LF3959 Cellulose, Fleetguard, and 3937695 Cummins. What do all these kinds mean? Delo 400 or Amsoil, Amsoil what? This site is Great but Diesel talk is all Greek to me. I understand most of the talk but, ??????????? on the tech of it all. My first 01 diesel is the first in my life. Some of the messages worry the h*ll out of me not knowing what to look out for or not to do. Thank you all for all the help, I can only hope to be as good as you all are. Terril:)

Filters

Welcome to the world of Cummins.

The Micro Glass is a media in the 12V filters. You stated you have a 01 so don't worry about this one. The Stratapore is from Fleetguard. Buy the 4/2/1 kits from Genos and get 4 oil, 2 fuel and 1 air filter for a savingings over individual prices.

Use an oil that you can get regularly and easily. Thats my oil advise. I use Rotella because I can get it readily.

TBarrett, Dont let it worry you, I had the same problem at first, it will all come together it just takes a little time. Glen is right if you want to get started right and not have to worry about the filters just go with Geno's 4/2/1 set, top of the line. Amsoil is a synthetic oil that a lot of the guys use, you can do some searches to find out more about that if interested.

Welcome TBarrett, The filter that the dealers sell is a Fleetguard, LF3959 I understand. That is what they call the standard filter for the 24 valve. The best is supposed to be the Fleetguar Strataspore, LF3894. Main thing is, don't put a Fram in it. I use Rotella T, 15w40. The oil plug takes a 3/8" ratchet (or breakover bar) to loosen, you just loosen it a round or two and the oil drains around it, torque on the plug when retightening is 43 foot pounds. You can go to Fleetguards site and get the location and phone # of their dealers. There are some other filters that are acceptable but I do not have a list. bg

Welcome, Terril

Don't worry... . most of us have had similar feelings as new members. Several of you "seasoned" TDR guys can attest to this from my private emails to you... thanks, BTW.

You'll find little argument on the TDR about oil and fuel filters because the Fleetguards are the best for your precious Cummins. Get the LF 3894 Stratapore oil filter and the FS 19579 fuel filters. As already said, Geno's is a good source. I buy mine from Cummins NW and pay ~ $13 for the fuel and ~ $ 9 for the oil.

Choice of oil??..... do a search and you'll tie up the better part of a month reading about individual recommendations. You'll also see that most don't recommend a change to synthetic until 15-20K miles.

I'm very happy with Delo 400. Very easy to find in one gallon jugs.

Good luck.....

help with 1st change

check out the link in my signature for tips on getting the filter off the first time.....

i'd go with rotella-T or delo400 (i prefer delo)

stay away from synthetics for now until it's broken in

I use the K&N HP-4003 oil filter on my '99. It's very convenient when it comes time to remove it because it has a 1-inch nut welded to the bottom of it. Just use a rachet and long extension.

Another good thing is that my local Advance Auto Parts store stocks it for about 9 bucks. I usually order five at a time from Diesel Injection Service for $7. 50 each; but it's nice to have a local source in case I forget to stock up.
