Since I have a 28' TT I had decided I would take it to Columbus with me, even tho I will be travelling alone. I had toyed with the idea of buying a camper instead as 25' is better than 53' for this trip. My wife actually thought that made sense ( huh?). I removed the canopy and the box mounted fuel tank and drove down to the Calgary area on the weekend and bought a 1989 9'9 Security Penthouse model. They were built in Western Canada just like my TT was. The guy needed it gone by this weekend as he had bought a new 5er. The best deals are usually off season.
It has a toilet and shower and they just added A/C last summer. I have to do some maintenance to it but my friend is an RV tech so that comes in handy. Even tho there are other trips that the camper will come in handy for I will probably sell it when I get back. After all it is 23 years old and I don't have a spot to store it. I can always buy another one later.
The one thing I have found out about doing mods to your truck is it quite often bits you back later. I bought a set of used camper brackets from my friend, as he has an 08 3500. They are Tork Lift with the shock type tie downs. I added a set of ladder bars last summer and wouldn't you know it the front mounts are right where the front camper brackets go. I was able to make them fit. I have an after market back bumper so the rear camper brackets, which go around the stock bumper brackets, won't fit either. To get the unit home I used HD ratchet straps but will build proper brackets for the trip. If it's not one thing it's another. Good thing I didn't buy full length running boards.
BTW When getting in or out of the truck with a camper on you have to watch your head #@$%!
