Okay guys.

I went and did the unthinkable. I test drove a 2010 2500

It's a true crew cab with an 8 foot bed, 6 speed manual and 4x4.

I would be trading in the truck in my signature. I have spent 2200 dollars rebuilding both axles except the center section. I've only had it for 2 years. I payed too much for it and haven't driven it.

I'm also trading in a 84 3/4 ton that will be asking for money before too much longer.

There going to pay of my loan at $3800.

Any advice?

Oh no say it ain't so... He is jumping ship, but i understand. When my dad see's a new one on the road he just drools lol... . but i could never afford one. .
Good luck with the new truck and let us know how it turns out...

Its all about the numbers the dealership offers. Sometimes when trading in you lose, sometimes the dealership wins:)

Time wise if your real busy and you want a new truck go for, its only money.

If it works for you then go for it. A good 1st gen is something the dealers want as they have people looking for them all the time. If you can make a good deal on the new truck and can afford, thats what its all about. :)

I appreciate the info guys.

The biggest thing is time.

I'm in the Navy and going to sea. I'm here for about 4 months and then I disappear for 4 months. It makes it hard to keep the truck going.

I also ride a motorcycle most of the time. If the weather gets real bad (read snow/ice) I want to have a dependable truck. Right now none of my trucks meet that criteria.

I will wind up with another 1st gen down the road. I still want to build my ultimate truck. I'm just going for the warranty for now while I need to drive it.

You guys have all been great and a big help. I will still be checking in here to see how things are going and drop my two cents. (does any one need change?)

JH, good luck on the new ride! Don't let the dealer lowball you on what the old truck is worth, even if you know that it's a heckuva deal considering what a lemon it's been for ya! ;) :-laf

good luck with the new 2010!! I really like them. . but I don't have enough $ and im scared ALOT buy the emissions systems on the new trucks. . as for reliable i would be the firstgen would be alot more reliable in the long road as its simple and not electronic! Enjoy the Navy, Thanks for your choice to serve! what are you going to be doing?

Thanks

Deo

... what are you going to be doing?
Thanks
Deo

I've been in for 10 years now.
I am an electrician on submarines.
I am enjoying the new truck so far.
The big thing about dependability is, the truck has to be working to begin with. I've spent half of the price of the truck rebuilding the ends of both axles. The synchro's for third are gone, and it started slipping out of gear in fourth. On top of that the transfer case will not come out of 4-Low without dumping the clutch in reverse a few times; adjusting the linkage didn't help.
Both the transmission and transfer case were going to need replacing in the next year.
To top it all off, the engine is not running up to par. 13 mpg and no power, it was going to need some work. Since I'm gone half of the year, I don't really have the time to tear things apart and put it back together.
I will get another first gen to tinker with, but for now I have a warranty on a truck that won't get very many miles for now. If my wife needs to get something while I'm out, she can.

Thanks again!. . Submarines are very interesting for me. My Uncle was in Sub School when he was in the Navy years ago. He was in a bad crushing accident on leave and had to drop the school. He ended up discharging from the Navy after that. I get to Groton, CT a few times a year and it is pretty neat to see the subs.

Enjoy the truck take some pictures and post em up. what you are buying is what I'd like too manual trans, crewcab, and 8 foot bed.

Too bad your first gen had a lot of problems. . Ive been really lucky I guess. basically change the oil on time, and do the brakes every 3 years. I get 15 mpg plowing / towing, and 17-19 mpg empty basic driving. I plow and use it often with little problems. . been driving a first gen for over ten years now.

Thanks,

Deo

I had no problems with my first diesel. 21 mpg mixed driving, and 26 highway, all unloaded. Towing a buddies Ford, I got 18 going through Seattle afternoon traffic
That's why I wanted another.
My first truck had 3. 54's, the second 4. 10's. In my opinion, these trucks should never have 4. 10's. They don't need them. That combined with the lack of an overdrive, they can't do modern highway speeds. They could barely do them when they were new!
