Mountain Man

Pit Bull, where is Ozarks, U. S. A. ? We are celebrating Thanksgiving family reunion in Bella Vista, Ark. I've been there a time or two and get a chuckle out of what they call mountains.

Got a ticket from a deputy sheriff the last time I was in BV because I wouldn't stop for her on an ice-covered hillside. I told her I had to keep my speed up, otherwise I'd never make it to the top of the hill. And I certainly didn't want to stop on the slope and have to go back to the bottom to get my momentum built up again. She still wrote me up.

I'm just joshin' ya about women ruling the world. But they do get an equal voice and they are definitely smarter than we are in some areas. But we're smarter than they are in other areas and they know it and let us have our way.

Most of the time. :)

Dodge Crew Cab?

I SECOND the suggestion that Dodge should build a "real" crew cab. A salesman told me it was a matter of the bigger truck not fitting in some garages. Hell, if they won't fit in a garage they should build a bigger garage or buy a smaller truck.

I know suburban families who love the big crew cabs built by Ford. They toss kids and stuff in the back and head out for the weekend. I think Dodge is missing the boat by not building one.

I've said it before

but it bears repeating!

I mean I've kinda gotten over the outside, and even the EPA motor, but that interior is HORRIBLE.

And nobody tell my Mom, she might want one... but then my sister might get her '99 and then we'd be 100% CTD! GEEZ, maybe an 04.

I Like the New Engine...

... couple of weeks ago I drove an auto 2500 2wd. It was definitely quieter than my truck, but still had the Cummins growl IMHO. Sounded good on the road, but awful quiet inside. I'd probably punt the muffler if I were to buy one, just so I could hear that inline six hum.

I didn't care much for the restyling, to me the dash seemed to be positioned waaay out there, I'd rather see the extra inches going to the rear seats to bring it to a true crew cab dimension. I sat in back seat, still had knees poking into the seatback. OK for small kids, but long trips with teens will be essentially the same as the old trucks.

Guages didn't bother me, seemed OK. Really the thing that I found most distressing was how far the engine was tucked up under the cowl, sure doesn't look easy to get to the rearmost valves.

Highs:

- New Cummins engine has more grunt

- Supposed to be much stiffer / stronger frame

- Tote / haul more

- Nice looking trucks!

- Nifty rear seat storage

Lows:

- "New" space seemed wasted to me

- "New" space gained at expense of shoving engine under truck bed ;)

- 4-door design doesn't buy much for the rear seat passenger

- DC didn't give me one for free even though I'm such a nice guy :D :D :D :D :D :D

I'd buy one to get the engine and capacities, but overall with no significant change in interior space I like the 2nd gens better. If DC ever gives us a real crew-cab it will be a no-brainer though.

Ozark mountains  They are old and worn down :( like me. I live about 1 1/2 hours from Bella Vista, Ark. We don't have mountains but we have some nice big hills and the lowest cost of living in the country :D A big plus we have the old midwest conservative values, if you like that sort of thing ;)

The lack of extra space might make it hard for Banks and similar companies to modify too.

How do you like your Line-X bedliner? I'm planning on having one "painted" on when my new 3500 arrives.

You must be from Missouri then. Arkansas is a southern state (I should know - I grew up in El Dorado). But I've lived in Colorado 23 years, long enough to be considered a native. Re liberals and conservatives, I can't imagine anyone but a conservative driving a Dodge truck!:)

I had the LineX bedliner in another truck I owned. I think they are the best. They say with any of the spray in liners it is the installer that makes the difference. I would ask to see the installers work and talk to some customers. That's what I did and it worked out great. I would install one in my CTD but it came with a real nice liner and it is not wearing the bed, so I can't justify the expense (too my wife :-laf ) I know you understand that last comment ;)

look me up!

Jeremiah-

If you have time in the neighborhood look me up- I live in Lowell, about 20 minute south of BV. My family loves CO- just drove thru 70 to go to a Jeep comp in Cedar City UT. Been to Durango, Penrose, Montrose, Silverton, Ouray, all beautiful, just pricey.

Looks like I'm keeping my O1 and the A4 Quattro, test ride last night said it's not that much quieter and the back seat wasn't that much bigger- My family really likes the A4 too.

Glad to hear that. There's a good installer in Colorado Springs and I have seen his work. I too think Line-X is better than Rhino. 10-4 on the wives putting the skids on our spending. Some of us would go broke on truck stuff. :) Nice to know they're watchin' us.

I like the Line-X, the Rhino is OK too but is "stickier" and hard to slide feed sacks out of the bed. (Yeah I'm too old to pick 'em up with one hand like I did when I was 10 years old :p )

Mine has worked out great, I got the over-the-rail spray and it has taken some pretty good beatings without showing any sign of wear. In fact, the stuff is so tough it will "sand" just about anything you slide across it if you aren't careful.

I have only run into one difficulty with it, and I think it would apply to any spray-on bedliner. I was putting Stanadyne fuel treatment in my tank one day, and fumbled the bottle when setting it down. Some of the Stanadyne spilled down the joint between the front and side of the bed, and sorta melted the liner where it ran. It didn't come off, and seems to still do the job, but it turned it "sticky" and dirt and such sticks to it and won't wash off so I have a sorta streak there. Some of these additives and stuff are pretty harsh...

Yo! Maybe can do that! We'll be in my new '03 3500 if it comes in in time. Otherwise, I'll have to fly in. My wife will be driving/flying back to Colorado. I have to leave BV (actually Tulsa) on Friday or Saturday for Indiana University where I will be directing a course for the next week. No rest for the weary! Maybe we can meet and have a cup or ...

Penrose? That's a wide place in the road on 115 about 25 miles south of Colorado Springs. Can't be that pricey, there's nothing there.

Hey Lisa, have you seen the DD truck?

I like the 2003s

Gents:

I like the 2003s. I just bought a 2002 3500 'cuz I wanted to keep my $3,500 worth of accessories off my 2000 2500. I'm gonn buy my wife a SRW 3500 4X4 QC LB Sport w/ 48RE auto next Spring.

I drove the 3rd generation at the TDR nationals and I want to say it's the HP, TQ and quality looked and felt real good. The motor is quite, but the turbo and the exhaust talks big. The Cummins ISB-E sounds nothing like a Duramax or a Ford. I've driven them all and Cummins is still head and shoulders above the rest.

With the way that truck felt, all I would do is add trans temp, boost and EGT gauges and a flow-thru muffler. That's all this truck needs.

FYI: The 2002 3500 is my 8th Dodge in 30 years of driving.

Forever Dodge and Forever Cummins!

I like the way you say that! What brand flow-thru muffler and brand of gauges would you suggest? Where would you suggest putting the gauges? Up on the dashboard?

wade,

thanks for the suggestion but i what i really meant about all the fixins was all oem options for right now. but that dd truck is AWESOME. but there are a couple things that i would want on my truck like 4 doors for easy in and easy out with the kids, 373 rearend. plus i would like to have a new truck to break in all on my own. :D :D :D

Here's What I'd Get....

Jeremiah:

I like the Di-Procol EGT, Trans Temp and Boost gauges, West Tech FP gauge (left off my earlier post), I like the A-Pillar double gauge mount AND the double gauge dash mount and I'd install either a Walker or Jardine 4" muffler. You'd need more 4" pipe to take up the length of the long stock muffler.

Take care and Happy Trails
