Any more doubters?

If you've been putting off fixing take a good look at these pictures. Get hold of illflem to find out about a jig or me to get information about how to do the tab fix. No matter how you do it, get it fixed!!! Fixing it after if falls out ain't cheap or easy.

I'll post some more pictures later tonight when I get home.

Big Thanks to MDW for giving me a hand with this. This would be a great time to put a cam in though.

Curtis, when we pulled my timing cover to check the KDP, the dern thing fell into my oil pan with a slight bump from a pair of needle nosed pliers. I was shocked. Cord Reynolds fished in out with a long magnet:D

Anyway the power increases seem to be knockin the pins out faster. Looks like you will be yanking the cam out too.

DON'T HESITATE AND MEET THIS FATE ... ... . pin or tab that sucker NOW ... ... ...

Illflem said it best ... ... LET THIS SERVE AS A WARNING

Actually, I'm repairing the case until I get the cash for a replacement camshaft. It's not a permanent fix and I don't expect it to be. Just enough to get by with for now. We were able to push the broken piece back down and just coated it with JB Weld. We'll see how good it works as a temporary fix.

Never Fear, there will be a new gear housing and camshaft in the truck soon enough. :)

Hey Curtis. . while we were throwing e-mails back and forth you didn't mention the pin issue. . sorry man hope your temp repair holds up for ya. . I was gone on a cruise and didn't see this post till today

Gary

It didn't look like the pin had room to exit the gear housing area. Did it fall into the oil pan?

Might be time for a trip to Vegas soon, use this unfortunate incident as an "opportunity" for some "upgrades. " :D

listen to Dr. Joe!

Oh man that blows Curtis. Wish you would have given me a buzz, I could have lent a hand. Call and get that camshaft now, there is always Piers who can get one(not a DD I'm sure) or Enterprise.

And the funny thing is that we just talked about that too!

Andrew

PS I think your truck has about 110,000 miles right?

Looks like you will be yanking the cam out too.

Why do you have to pull the cam out? Did it bend the camshaft?

The KDP struck again and got my cousin Greg's 98 3500. It still ran ok, but got the crack in the top of the timing housing. He hasn't pulled it down yet.

Cam removal is requires to replace the gear housing. Since I'm not replacing it yet, I haven't ad to pull the camshaft.

My truck just clicked over at 159,000 miles a couple of days ago. It's been modifed since 121,000.

Gary, it happened about an hour after or e-mail volley yesterday. Drove to work for about and hour. Got home and there was a pretty good spot of oil under the truck. Drove stright to MDW's place and started tearing it apart.

Andrew, it's still at Mike's place letting the JB cure. I'm gooa finish it this afternoon, gimme a shout if ya wanns come down adn check it out. I wasn't a fun guy to be around yesterday anyways. ;)

Sad thing is, we've been discussing when we planned on fixing it. I was planning on tabbing the pin due to the front seal leaking already. Two birds right? Just took too long to get to it. That's why I turned down an offer for the KDP jig from CPFF when he first made them.

Oh well, live and learn.

Hey Gary, Wanna trade trucks?????? You guys gotta see his flames, they look awesome!!

Since Cummins has become an expert at replacing kdp damaged cases they have come up with a method that doesn't require removing the cam. Instead the gear is removed, case replaced and the gear heat pressed back on. Supposedly eliminates 75% of the work involved. The instructions were posted here before, perhaps someone still has them?

Do a search for KDP. Then just sit back and read for a couple of hours to decide how you want to fix it.

There is a jig that you can use to drill and tap the gear housing for an allen screw. The allen screw prevents the pin from coming out.

Or you can take the gear housing cover off, and there is a diagram for a tab that covers the dowel pin and prevents it from coming out. Either way, you really need to get it taken care of.

This isn't much fun.
