thanks rubicki for the detailed instructions... ... ... very well done..... I will ck it out... ...

phillip... ..... this is what the local ford dealer told me as well... ..... does anyone know what to do if this heater solenoid part is not available? baron

All you could do is check the used market and see if any are in the junk yards. Someone might have the number for a guy up in WI (I think) that has a yard with a bunch of CTD trucks in it.

I know the 3 that were listed in the WI dealer at that time aren't there now.

I got all three of them.

One last place to check before heading to the junkyard would be a Cummins distributor... Although I could not find a Cummins part number for the solenoids, I did recently notice that they were pictured in the Cummins engine manual exactly as they are on our trucks... Perhaps they are Cummins parts after all... The distributor may be able to cross-reference other Cummins applications if these parts have been discontinued.

The most frustrating thing about owning a 1st gen RAM, for me, is how they keep discontinuing everything!!

I will be at a Cummins distributor tomorrow morning to order some parts for a clutch/rear main seal job - I will inquire about the solenoids and let you know what happens.

Philip - If you come across a name or number for the guy with the CTD yard could you please let us know?

Thanks, Rob

Hey guys, I found them!!

Thanks to Philip's part number information with the words "White-Rodgers"! ... . White-Rodgers is a division of Emerson Electronics... I went to their website and downloaded the data sheet for the solenoid (complete with load ratings and p/n descriptions)... I put it up on my web page at the following URL:

http://www.kubicki.tv/GridHtrSolenoids.pdf

The sheet is in pdf format so you will need Acrobat Reader or a Acrobat Reader plugin installed in your web browser.

Go to the White-Rodgers main page to locate a distributor and you should be able to buy the solenoid directly from the source (not through a Dodge or Cummins dealer)... The URL for White-Rodgers is:

http://www.white-rodgers.com/index.html

Best of luck!

I went over to the web page earlyer. But I wasn't as lucky at finding the info you did. But I did find the phone number for the other item I posted on.

I just copyed this from an earlyer post. Thanks to CrewCabDiesel for this one.

1st & 2nd Gen. Trucks Being Parted Out !

Hey Guys, I just found a Junk yard in northern Wisconsin that has a bunch of Dodge Trucks with Cummins being parted out. The guy to talk to is named Paul, he told me that he has Cummins trucks from 1989 to 2001. I just bought a couple parts off a "early 91" and Paul seems to know what he is talking about. They will ship COD or take credit cards. To me this is a big deal, I have been looking for "used" Cummins parts for a couple of years. Their phone number is 1-800-338-4002.

I hope it is as easy as ordering from them. But the way most of the big 3 work is to block the supplier from selling direct to aftermarket.

roger roger that... ..... I am on the trail of White-Rogers now... ... . thanks so much ... ... hmm that boneyard sounds good too! baron

I called White-Rogers today... ... they won't sell to public so they gave me a name of a dealer in my area Reno. Called a very accomodating guy and gave him the part #. He called back and said it is OEM and he cannot buy the part from them either! Says it is Freightliner part and I have to call them... . looking now for a Freightliner number... ... .

Baron,

Try "Stancor" (a large White-Rodgers distributor service mark):

http://www.stancor.com

I hit thier site and came up with the two following contacts in your area:

Allied Electronics Inc. Las Vegas 89102 (800) 433-5700

Graybar Electric Co. Las Vegas 89103 (702) 876-9888

I also found another similar data sheet to the previoius one, except this one has the same part with a Stancor part number... . You can see the sheet at the following address:

http://www.kubicki.tv/GridHtrSol_dstrib.pdf

(allow about 10s over 56k to see the doc)

If I look at the p/n breakdown from the first document (in my previous post) and determine the ratings of the part from the numbers Philip posted, then the following Stancor part number listed in the second document is an exact match:

120-901

If you call Allied or Graybar and ask them for Stancor "DC power contactor #120-901" they should be able to hook you up.

Since there seems to be so many different flavors of this solenoid I find it hard to believe that it is an OEM part only... . Even the data sheets list various applications for them... I think its just a matter of finding the right electronics distributor who carries the Stancor (a. k. a White-Rodgers) line.

Good luck and let me know what you find out - Now I'm darn curious. :)

Well sir... ... I called a Stancor dealer in Sacto and they said no problem and ordered me two out of S Carolina I believe. Part # 120-901 at $14. 95 ea... ..... so in about three days I will see what I get!!!! thanks baron

Awesome! ... And they are about half of what you would have paid for them at a Dodge/Cummins dealer... I hope they work out for you, Baron.

My intkae heater is messed up too. It's the little right angle bracket on the side of the heater with the wires going into it.

Everytime it cycles it shorts out and arcs! It is really rusted too.

(only one of the studs does this). Is this bracket separate from the heater?

What should I do??

Thanks,Steve:(

Glad to hear about the grid heater relays being aftermarket. That will make a lot of people happy.

CAROLINA CUMMINS

The part you are asking about if I read your post right is #4429417 at $27. 10 it is called terminal electrical.

Let me know if the pic I have attached is the correct part.

Baron, Steve,

The Cummins parts catalog lists the "electrical terminal" as part number 3914417... It unbolts from the side of the heater (look underneath the ledge where the wires bolt on)...

Steve, it sounds like one of the wire-to-terminal nuts vibrated loose or something... How badly are your terminal studs rusted?... You might be able to get away with unbolting the terminal and wires, cleaning all contact surfaces with sandpaper (the studs with steel wool) and re-assembling with some dielectric grease to prevent corrosion... . While you have the terminal off, it would be a good time to check the heater element for excessive resistance with an ohm meter... If the resistance is high (near 1k ohm or more) then you should replace the heater. (Cummins part# 3913348).

Rob

The part # I gave was a Dealer part #. I do not have a cummins dealer within 50 miles. I buy most of the time from NAPA or dealer.

Philip, there are some Cummins distributors that will ship to your door if you ever need a part thats only available from Cummins.

Getting the right part for a 1st gen. can be hard at times... The more possible avenues at our disposal the better. :)

I know there are some Cummins dealers that will ship to me. But until I get down around Indy to check some of them out. I just keep local for now.

The two stores I work with right now. I can order the parts without going in a putting down a deposit. The one dealer I work with gives me good prices for dealer. They have been cheaper than any other dealers I have called. I do call to find the best price from dealers too. They are different on prices from dealer to dealer. That also includes new vehicle prices also.

I priced a new CTD in 88. I went to 4 different dealers. Two of them was within $100 dollars. The other two were $1k to $2k higher.
