Have new 2003 DOdge diesel, got it in April have 1700 miles on it when I frist got it was cold outside and when I turn the key on waiting for the light on the dash board to go out I can start the trk there was no noise, just as soon as the weather got warm when I go through the same steps I heard a buzzing sound, it just happens in the morning after I leave the trk over night it stays in a garage over night. I can leave the trk set for a couple hours and when I start it again there is no sound. The buzzing sound only appears in the morning when the trk set over night. The trk starts just find when I hear the buzz or not. First Dodge rest where Checys and Ford. How long before I should change the oil, remember I have only 1700 miles on it, I call it my retirement trk so it has to last for ever.

Your engine doesn't have glow plugs. What you're hearing is probably the fuel lift pump. I'm not that familiar with the 3rd gen trucks but I believe it will energize the lift pump to pressurize the fuel system (if necessary) just like the 2nd gen ones do. I'm also moving this thread to the 3rd gen engine forum where it will get better exposure.

You are correct Steve, the lift pump cycles in the same manner as the 2nd gens. I bumped the starter to prime my filter canister when I changed my fuel filter lately and to also check the lift pump flow and it behaved the same.

Mine is very quiet, no buzz from the pump. All I here are a couple clicks. Are you sure the buzz is normal with the 03?

Your right, I went out and checked mine. I can't here it with the door closed. I guess I never started it with the windows down either. But, with it open I heard a light "hiss" sound.

Mine is very low in noise, inside there is zero pump noise and very little outside. Nice improvement still. Oo.

See my post below entitled "fuel pump question" I'm hearing the same thing under the same circumstances. It's usually after the truck has been parked for a while in hot weather. The pump is kind of loud till it pumps up. Guess I'm not the only one hearing it. :)
