GM 350 dist wiring help

Helping my dad with a 50 merc street rod were doing a 350 gm conversion (used motor) im stuck on the dam distributer wiring. The dist is mid 80s and has 2 harneses.

1 with pink,black and dark brown.



1 with green, white,black and brown. (black and green are wire nutted together by last owner)



What i need is which color gets 12v hot off key and which color gets ground to test run the engine?

Is this a HEI unit? does it have a coil separate from the distributor?

The ground is through the distributor. There should be a power positive wire and a tachometer wire. Use a multimeter on continuity , put positive lead on one of the wires with the ground on the dist. housing and slowly turn the distributor. You should get continuity on the positive wire.

I hope this works. I do know that the dist. grounds through the body of the dist. itself.

HEI i think because no external coil (only 8 wires on cap).

If it is an HEI, an Very large cap with the coil in the center, the wires come out to one side, underneath the cap. They are male spade connectors. Hook a wire on the connector that says Batt.
