Why your injectors get damaged...

Anyone know what a 6. 2 would weigh in relation to a Cummins? I'm looking for a lift for my truck (see sig) and I'm concerned about the extra weight up front. Skyjacker offers an extra leaf kit to make up for the Chevys with the 6. 2. Wondering how that compares to the weight of my CTD. Thanks. :)

Awwh, you sold the 1st Gen. :( I liked that one. You've got yourself a neat one to replace it though.

As for weight, I think that there is probably 300 or so pound difference. 1000 vs. 700. No need to say which is beefier, I mean heavier. :D

Thanks for the info, Brian. I figured the 6. 2 had to be lighter. Makes me wonder why SJ makes this extra leaf (they call it a "fitted leaf") when that's not much different than the weight of a big block. Maybe there's more weight yet in all the rest of the equipment for the 6. 2?

It was funny when I called SJ. The tech guy, who was very nice and helpful, kinda got quiet for a second when I told him I had a '79 Chevy with a Cummins. Then he said "you mean a Dodge?" I said "no, it's been swapped in". He said "I wish they came that way from the factory, 'cuz that engine will last forever".

Yeah, I miss my Dodge. My friend has this :D stuck on his face now (his first CTD). It'll take a while to make this one like I had the Dodge, but the extra room is great. Lots of shopping and work to do - lift, tires, wheels, interior, gauges, tweaking, etc.

I thought that I remembered the 6. 2 weighing around 700. After I posted, I did a search to double check myself. I remembered correctly (why can I remember this and not important stuff  ) and found that alot of people compared the weight to that of a BB.

Nice driveline on the "new" truck. What 5 speed does it have? It should look great when you get done. Keep your Reader's Rigs section updated.

One thing about these years of GM 4x4's is the turning radius. Or should I say the lack of. ;)

I was told by a retired Chevy mechanic that the 6. 5L (probably 'bout the same weight as a 6. 2L) weighs almost twice what a 454 V-8 weighs.

I would say that the 6. 5 weighs anywhere from 800-900 lbs. I can't find an exact number though.

Just for those wondering the Cummins is between 950-1000 and the 7. 5 Powerstroke is a little over 900.

I have a printout of various diesel engine weights taken from an old post on "Diesel-Central" & it lists 701# for the 6. 2 so the 6. 5 should be just a little bit more. Maybe 750#? IIRC a SBC weighs in the neighborhood of 480# stock & a BBC ~560# stock. FWIW, by stock, I mainly mean with cast iron heads & perhaps intake manifold. Switching to aluminum heads alone would drop those weights by about 50-60#.

Looks like HillCountryKid had it right to begin with, ~300# is the difference in weight btwn the 6. 2 & CTD.

Good info, guys.

Brian, it has the famous Getrag. ;) This one was recently rebuilt and works well. I had a Getrag in my Dodge, and had no problems with it. I think the key to them is keeping them overfilled with synthetic.

Took the crew cab & car trailer to Maryland and back this weekend, about a 1400 mile round trip. The truck did fine, so I guess I'll keep it. :D

The turning radius is definitely large. Looks awfully long when you look back to back up too. I'll add pics as I turn the truck into what I want it to be. Going to order wheels, tires and lift this week. Need an interior from another crew cab or Suburban too, if you know where I might find one.

I'm gonna disagree with OnlyCummins here. I remember reading the SBC goes around 575 pounds and the BBC goes about 685 pounds, both with iron heads, intake and manifolds. Anyone else got an opinion.

I stand corrected.

Whadya mean boat anchors? You guys are just envious of the raw unadulterated power of the GM anchors ... eerr ... I mean engines.

Too bad you did'nt plop a NVG 5600 in there. ;)

With knowing what the 1st Gen looked like, I have faith that you'll make this one look pretty dern good looking too. What wheels, tires and lift do you plan to go with?

Lookin' forward to see this thing come together. Like a project truck in one of my magazines. :D

I bet someone could sell a ton of Suburbans if they did a clean Cummins swap in them and offered a choice of transmissions. I miss all of the interior room of my Burban. Guess I'll just have to get a horse trailer with living quarters for sticking stuff in while trailriding.

A 6 speed would be sweet. Maybe someday, along with a P-pump.

Here's the current plan: Eagle 589 wheels (same as on last truck, but 16"), 285/75R16 tires and a 4" lift. I'd like a 6" lift and 35's, but I think that'd be too tall for use with the gooseneck. Still investigating the right lift, then I'll order it all. Can't wait to get it lifted. The Dodge sat high stock, and I feel like I'm in the weeds now. :D Then the interior, gauges, BOMBing, etc.

A Cummins Suburban would be cool. I need a bed for the gooseneck though. The crew cab reminds me a lot of the Subs I've had. Subs are great vehicles.

Wow, it's been three months since I bought the crew cab! I haven't made much progress, but things are moving, just slowly. I got a new job two months ago and now work a lot of OT now too. Anyway, I've been researching & ordering. So far I have a Skyjacker 4" lift, wheels and tires sitting in the shop. Still waiting on Skyjacker to ship the custom extra leaves for the front. Just bought a complete interior from California. I'll have to install power windows and locks, seats, carpet, headliner, dash, door panels, weatherstripping, etc.

Tomorrow, I'm looking at buying another truck to drive while I install all this and to keep the crew cab out of the salt. ;) It's an '82 Chevy K20 gasser. As a bonus, this one has a plow and dump bed.
