Thanks, TDR Staff

The dealer that I bought my truck from (which sells Chevy and Dodge) is giving me a courtesy oil change and checking all the fluids. When I scheduled my appointment yesterday I happen to ask what brand of oil they will be using in my truck and he said "Oh, we use GM oil in all of the diesels we service. " That caught me by surprise but didn't question it. I knew that I would get much better advice here. So, does GM oil meet the API specs of a cummins engine? Should I demand Mopar oil be used? I want to keep it friendly since they are doing it for free, but don't want to void the warranty on my truck, but they should know, shouldn't they.

I had a dodge dealer change my oil once. They put 10/30 quaker state in my previous 90 CTD. Specify 15/40 and I think you will be ok, but with a dealer you never know. They may have only one barrel of oil. Don't take anything for granted!!

The dealership deals with a wide variety of cars however you are much more faithful to your Cummins, so chances are that with a little research (like on TDR) you will run circles around the dealer with diesel info. In the many many times I have dealt with the dealers service department, I have never quite got the feeling that I am in 100% good hands. What I am really trying to say is that dealers are the biggest dumbf***'s on the face of the earth. Now I feel much better... .

Bet G. M. certified oil for a DuraMax is just fine for a Cummin. At the dealers I worked at in previous years the bulk oil we bought(kendall) was certified for gas and diesel. Yes it was a 10w30 back then. 10 years or better(NISSAN STORE)but we made sure the oil was ok for both. But I bet Cummin aproved and D/max approved is just fine

For your own peace of mine just take three gallons of your preferred oil with you, and have them use it. Delo-15w/40, Rotella-15w/40 or what ever dino you prefer. Three gallons only going to run you around twenty bucks. :D "no worries".

I decided to buy my own oil (Rotella T) and had them put it in. Made me a feel alot better knowing what went in. At least I didn't have to pay for the filter and the labor. Plus it is only 7 degrees today, didn't have to freeze my but off changing oil. Thanks for the input guys!
