I am experiencing a high frequency vibration through the accelerator pedal and gear shifter during acceleration and at cruising speeds. The vibration feels like your foot does when it goes to "sleep". It seems to be more noticable under a "load" for instance accelerating to pass another vehicle. This condition exists pulling a trailer or running empty. Also, the vibration occurs between 1700 RPM - 2700rpm with and without a trailer. Even at idle I compared the gear shift vibration of my truck to a friends 96 and mine vibrates quite a bit more. I have had the tires balanced about 3 different times with no difference. I have checked the u-joints, ball joints, everything is tight.

The vibrating truck is:

1997 4x4 Extended Cab Long Box

Manual Trans, 94K miles, No modifications

Owned the truck since new.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Since you have a X cab my first guess is that the vibration is coming from the carrier bearing that supports your two section driveline. This is a common problem with no fix that I'm aware of besides avoiding the situations that cause it. You can also check if the rubber isolator for the bearing is intact. Chevy eliminated this problem on their trucks by changing to a one section driveshaft, Dodge doesn't seem to feel it is worth fixing.

I think there was a TSB on this, if it is the carrier bearing angle. I don't know the # of the bulletin but it should be easy to find. Basically it involves placing a 1/2" spacer plate between the mount and the bearing. I wonder though, the vibration from the carrier bearing being at the wrong angle would not be that high in 'frequency' but rather more a low frequency shuddering. I have this problem and it is definitely NOT like a 'foot asleep' tingling. I suspect you may have to look elsewhere for this source of vibration. My . 02$

I took the truck to the shop and at first they said it might be a bad turbo or motor mount. Called them today to find out that they replaced the belt tensioner and A/C compressor pulley. I am not sure if this is going to work since I still experienced a high speed vibration at idle with the belt removed. Guess I'll see tomorrow.

If it did it with the belt removed, new belt and parts won't fix it. If it's under warrantee, no problem. If not, I'd be pretty upset.

When it does it at idle are you moving? Clutch in or out? Any engine speed worse than others?

If while moving, does it do it with the engine off?

Need more info!

The gear shift vibrates with the clutch in or out, sitting still or moving. The only time it does not vibrate is when the engine is turned off. As for pedal vibration it is very obvious under acceleration at any speed, but is still noticable at cruising speeds as well. The vibration isn't any different at 70 than it is at 40 or 30 or any speed. Going down the highway, I have turned the truck off and the vibration is gone. I think it might be the motor mounts, but trying to tell Dodge that is a different story.

minghram,

Did you every figure out your problem w/ the vibration?

I have the same symptoms as you w/ the same truck to. Anyways, I'm curious b/c I was searching the forums and this topic came through.

Thanks

Sorry, but I have not figured out the cause of the vibration. I spoke with Rick a Dave's Diesel in Angola, Indiania over the phone. He suggested bringing the truck in because several things could cause this vibration such as lift pump, timing, weak injector etc. Making a trip there isn't easy since its 2. 5 hours away. I hope to make it there next week. I'll post an update on our findings.

I hope you have better luck w/ it then me. I have set timing, new lift pump, overflow valve, injectors and nothing works.

Did you rule out motor mounts? I hope its not a bad cam or cylinder.

I really hope you can figure it out b/c I'm at a loss. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply
