Go with ME

I am running ME (2) and XP on different machines, ME load and shutdown excellent on the machine that was a clean install. The upgrade machine is considerable slower, but the registery is screwed up for sure.



The XP is clean install on my portable and is slower to load.



ME seems faster, but the machine with ME is set up for the kids and everthing is top of line SCSI, Video, etc. so the protable maybe at a disadvange, Both are one gig hertz machines.



I like XP better, but I think you will be happier with ME, you can get a full version cheap on Ebay.

I have 2 ME CPUS and 1 WIN 2000 and 2 XP,and I hate ME it is the worst Operating System Microshaft even put out. . Win 2000 is the best and most stable of them all. .

I agree, ME is a poor system

Even Microsoft knows it's a poor system, they don't even support it. We bought 5 Gateway 9550 notebooks at work that came loaded with ME. Needless to say, after every single one of them would crash after about 5 min. we started over and loaded XP. Glad to hear you are having good luck with ME, but you are the minority.

I also have ME, don't care to much fer it,I want to get Professinal(or is XP the same thing?) installed,but as useuall got other more important things to spend my $ on, in time I'll get it.

I haven't used ME very much, but I agree with Dodgeboyz-Win2k is probably Microsoft's most stable os. I've heard good things about XP, but I think it has too much fluff built in.

I have XP, and after refuseing to upgrade from Win95 to anything else, I wouldn't use anything other then 95 or XP.

We have ME on three laptops and a desktop. No problems and it's faster than '98. What exactly is it that folks don't like about ME? It's the worst... doesn't tell me what the problem is.

ME is based on the 9X kernel and it seems to be hit and miss on some computers as to how well it works,there has been a number of complaints on its stability,I never had good luck with it,seems to be prone to locking up on some systems and down right nasty on others,ME does not like change,I think if you leave your computers enviroment alone and don't add a lot of software and hardware to your system,like if you are just using your PC to just surf the internet,but you don't download a lot of software and just leave it in one enviroment it should be ok,for instance,my sister has it and it works great,but she does nothing but look at the internet,buys cloths on line and that is basicly it,if you are a gamer with a high priced video card ME may not like it.

As for XP and 2000 they are based on the NT kernel which is real stable,for instance all my computers are overclocked,I was never able to do this with ME,I have no probem with the NT kernel software,but most dont overclock there systems. But if you use your PC for a small business Win 2000 or XP is the best,when you leave your system on for a long time,all my computers are on 24/7 and never a problem,as some with ME may never have a problem,all I can say if your computer does what you want it to do and it works for you leave it alone,ME just don't work for me,if ME seems to be working for you it must be happy with its enviroment,but if you get something like the blue screen of death and you don't know why,there doesnt really need to be a reason with ME...

The only real problem I have with ME is memory leaks. I have to reboot this box at least once a day to get the resources back. I run the same software sets plus quite a few on my laptop with 98 and have no issues at all. The leaks are not there with 98. 98 even shuts down right on the laptop. I am going to bandaid this box with more memory now that the RDRAM is cheap, but sooner or later I am going to have to wipe it and load 2000 or XP. I would not recommend ME either, I think XP is the way to go for the home user.

Im sure you already know this,but all those icons in the lower right hand corner,if you have a bunch showing that uses a lot of resourses,you can fix that,go to start then run and type in msconfig and go to startup and uncheck all that you dont use,you have to be careful not to shut down something that you need. .

But like I said you probably already knew that

We have about 20 laptops with ME installed and Im not impressed with them.

Thanks Dave, I did already know that. It is after I close a program that it will not release the memory. My memory just gets lower and lower until I reboot or lock up. If you know anything about fixing the leaks I would appreciate it.

This computer I"m on right now runs win98 SE, but the computer that connects all mine to the internet runs FreeBSD. It has not been rebooted since the last time it got accidentally disconnected, some months ago. It is used for game playing, dialing up the internet, surfing the 'net, and so on. In spite of the fact that Netscape for Linux has crashed, and taken down the whole GUI, the machine doesn't need rebooting. You just start the GUI back up, and in 15 seconds you're running again.



I have been paying attention lately to the emulators, which will allow you to run Windows based programs on non-windows machines. This has interested me enough, that I'm currently considering abandoning windows OS's permanently. You can run Microsoft Office, and even IE without a running Windows machine. As this emulator continues to improve, it appears to me that Windows is becoming less and less interesting, since the only reason I have for running it = software availability = appears be close to immaterial.

I've had trouble setting up some programs in certain Windows OSs. Like Netscape 7. 9 on a Windows 98 machine. After installing, sometimes I can't get Netscape to run. I then remove Netscape and clean out the registry and install Netscape 6. 0. Then it seems to be fine.



I wonder why Windows has a problem running Netscape

I have ME on my tower and '98 on the laptop. Both work good. I Run AutoCad 3d and fully expect to reboot at least once if not twice a day. Gives me a good reason to go get a cold one!
