seems like from searching all the opinions on this transmission are for 12v'ers. Anybody have one on a 24? Can't justify $3k+ on a TC/VB. Any help is appreciated!

Send Bodine a PM he is a 24v that is running a Goerend transmission and he tows alot.

There are several others too, but most of them don't mouth much about them.

I would be glad to answer any guestions for you.

I don't think anyones TC/VB combo is 3000$ though, maybe a complete exchange transmission.

I talked to Dave yesterday about his trannies. I'm very impressed with what he had to say. And for what he was recommending, the price would be about 1/2 to 2/3 of what the other major players are charging. He does this by using the factory valve body with some modificatons, and installing a triple loc torque converter. I can't explain it very well, but he made a tremendous amount of sense. When I finally get transmission work done, he will have to be a major consideration.

Randy, when you talk to dave again about the transmission, ask him about upgrades to the transmission it's self like 2nd gear band and direct clutch drive to a 5 clutch pack. It is normal to use the factory V/B and change the internals to it on the mods! I run and indorce DTT but if you want to run Dave's transmission that is your business :)

Jim,

I'm certainly in no position for a transmission war, since I'm still stock. I have no doubt that DTT is a great transmission, and was planning on going with them. However 2 things have worked to change my mind, Bill's posts on the TDR, and talking to Dave. I think there are 3 good transmissions, maybe more; DTT, ATS, and Goerend's. All 3 seem to have good points, I can't find too many bad points of any. Of the 3, however, Goerend's is definately the least expensive.

Yea at $2550 for a whole transmission with tripple disc clutch. Hard to beat that when the others are so high. Don't tell Dave though - he might raise his prices:D Dave's web site is not as nice as the other two though.

Mine is coming Monday and I'm planning on putting it in on Tuesday or Wednesday. I'll let you know how it goes and how I like it after that.

Where did you get $3k price from?

Here is pricing right off web sites, Gorenends site doesn't have pricing list so I'm not sure of their prices.

Prices= TC,----VB,----Total

ATS, $1370, $400, = $1770

BD, $995, $399, = $1394

DTT, $925, $375, = $1300

These prices don't count install, way under $3,000 big ones.

If you take the 1300-1500 dollar figures (roughly) plus shipping to you and returning the cores, and figure in a rebuild it goes up sustantially. Most guys are going to go for a full rebuild with the goodies and extra clutches etc when upgrading, it only makes sense when the transmission is out already, saving the R/R labor. At the very least who would not want an inspection done of the internals? This costs money. You are staring 2500 in the face and it goes up from there if you need a rebuild. There are what, maybe 10 guys on here that can rebuild their own transmission? The rest pay labor, and that is whatever the going rate is at the approved shop in your area. Maybe a poll for transmission upgrade final cost is in order?

My point is it is darned expensive, and 3 grand is not a bad guess IMO.

LSMITH,

I agree with what you are saying but I was looking at what Dixie Dawg has. It's a 2001 truck with only an EZ on it, unless he has abused it no other upgrades are needed to have a reliable transmission and he stated TC/VB only. As to the install price, he will have this cost no matter what TC/VB he uses so that isn't relevant to his statement. He's saying ATS and DTT’s TC/VB combo are way higher than Gorenends TC/VB which they aren't. I agree they are higher but not as high as implied and you get what you pay for.

I was quoted a prive of $3400 for a rebuild of my 2001. 5 with 3x,xxx miles on it. This was a rebuild using DTT from an authorized installer, with the inturnal work done.

I was quoted $4,900 for a new BD transmission as opposed to a rebuild that I wanted, the authorized dealer/installer thought a new transmission would be better. Made it sould like they could not to the inturnal work themselves.

I have not gotten an ATS quote, so I can not say about them. But the Goerend sounds like the best deal of all. The DTT has got to be the most proven transmission out there, but there is room for more then one good transmission. After all there is more then one good vendor for hp add on's isn't there?

I really would like the DTT clutch packs, and the rest of the inturnals including the billit input/output shaft, and an ATS TC/VB with their lockup controller.

when a DTT trans is overhauled several seals are replaced with different type seals I am not sure of the benefits of these seals other than one improved piston seal that has a wider dimension that keeps the seal from rolling over disableing that piston. I would guess that the other trans biulders replace this seal also but the trans must come apart to install these seals. also in a DTT trans certian thrust and clearence tolerances are set to tighter tolerances than factory, again I would think the others do this also. this might explain the higher cost of a rebiuld, along with new clutches and bands.

A full blown ATS trans w/triple loc and one controller is $3505 plus shipping and your core. I had it shipped air freight to me and surface back the core. Shipping for me was $1426. 70. With shipping my transmission cost 5 large ones, plus my labor to r/r the trans. Lucky you live Hawaii... . yeah right, not when it comes to shipping.

I have an appointment to get my 97 upgraded at Goerends, in mid-august. I'm getting the Big Dave's Delux, tripple pattie converter with machined cover, & whatever upgrades and/or repairs the transmission will need at the time. I plan on spending every minute right there watching them work me over. I emailed Dave a while back, and told him what I had, and what I should expect to see if he opened up the transmission. I got a long, thorough answer back, with prices. He discussed, the 2nd gear strap, valve body options, wear on planets, explained the differences in the 96 & up trannys etc. Seems to know his business, & comes highly recomended.

Goerend prices:

Single disc TC = $450

Triple disc TC = $1100

VB = $450

He said you can go up to 350 HP with the single disc TC, but I opted for the Triple disc.

Dave knows Torque Converters

This is obvious by the stack of TC carcasses in his shop. He has been doing TC work for many years. LSMITH & I had a walking talking tour through his shop in May. We talked the advantages (long time) and dis-advantages (was there any?) of a multiple disc converter. We talked stators and the many options available in milling the stock core. We talked valve bodies and shifting patterns and transmission rebuilds.

IMHO, The best would be a complete trany rebuild by Dave and a new TC. I think you know where I'm going for my tansmission ... Goerend.

Diesel on

-John

PS

I watched one of his conventional (single disc) converters put 315 hp to the dyno without any slipping. This was at a moderate TC lock boost pressure. I'll repeat, MODERATE TC lock line boost pressure. Dave built this TC twice. The first build did not meet his standards.

Dixie Dawg,

I too think that Goerend is the best and most economical way to go. My situation in dealing with Dave was kind of unusual in that because of the extended warranty I have, I needed to have my transmission overhauled at my local stealership. All the upgraded parts were purchased from Dave and they installed them during the overhaul. Since I was trying to save some money, Dave also walked the dealership tech through many valve body mods over the phone and with faxes. With the many hours on the phone talking to both me and the dealership technician I don't think Dave made a penny on the whole deal. When I checked the line pressure after I got a chance(I didn't want the dealership to because they charged me for every minute they could, even the time the tech was on the phone learning from Dave), The pressure ended up a few psi. lower than what Dave wanted it to be. He didn't blame the Tech, or cast any blame on anyone. He walked me through an adjustment and when that still didn't give the results he wanted he said, "let me just send you another valve body". So my question was of course "how much", because Dave spent hours on the phone with the dealership tech helping him redo the original valve body and probably lost money. I could not believe my ears when Dave said "nothing, I won't charge you". In fact he was very insistant that he was not paid. He shipped it to me for free and I installed it myself. I sent him some money anyway but not as much as it was worth. Needless to say I have a very, very high opinion of Goerend Bros. Transmissions.

Dixie I have same truck like you and just installed ATS TC and VB. Cost was $1370 TC and $400 VB shiping cost was like $120 included price for return of the core. I paid local trans. shop $ 400 to install the TC and VB I installed myself ( very easy to do ). That put me close to the $2290, and I bought the electronic controller for $290 ( not installed yet ). With this controller will be $ 2580. But worth of every penny. Hope this help .
