Heres the story, picked up a 96 12 valve 5 speed in LA in October with 279k on it. Put a 100 plate & gauges in it when we swung over to TX.

On the way back, we pulled my 98 12v with it.

Halfway through Missouri, we lost 5th gear

I took it in (I farm out jobs that involve my own vehicles at times) and they confirmed the nut had backed off and had apparently been "fixed" a few times as the splines were stripped right off.

I ordered a Blumenthal NV4500 trans and talked them into a 12 month/12k mile warranty as the 6 month unlimited mile warranty didn't do me much good as the "towing season" doesn't start until nearly May.

So now its May and we've put 2-3k miles on the trans, and now 3rd gear synchro is shot. . Blumenthals is sending me a new trans, but I have to pay labor for install along with shipping one way.

We'll see how things turn out. . Not real happy about it!

Have you checked the alignment of the bellhousing to the block? I have heard of problems due to that. I had mine done when I put the first clutch on and it seems to shift smoother. Or maybe an alignment dowel is missing?

Bobcat,

Hate to think what you are paying B's but if there's is not done, get the silver or gold shaft from Quad 4x4. Their website is Home. The shafts are full splined for the 5th gear so the nut will not come off easily and the 5 gear is a close tolerance fit unlike the stock shaft. Go to their website and read all about it. Just an idea.
