The transmission on my 01 Sport 3500 4x4 is slipping/shuddering in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd lockup and 4th lockup. It is not the torque converter. It seems NOT to slip in reverse.

I don't have my manual with me, and I'm 750 miles from home with a camper and 3 kids.

I am going to pull the pan and see if I can adjust the bands and see if anything is obviously broken. One is accessible from the outside of the trans, the other is behind the pan.

My HOT question is... what is the adjustment on BOTH bands? I thought one was 3? turns from xx? in/lbs, and can't even remember the other. I can't remember which band is on the outside and which is inside. Please help me adjust the thing and try and baby this thing back home! Gotta do this one in the dark with NO manual, so any info would be helpful.

By the way, the trans is an ATS triple lock and haven't had problems for the last 80,000 miles until yesterday. The bands were set per the manual, so the specs still go for my trans.

Thank You.

Which auto is it? 46RE, 47RE... . On the 47RE the band adjustment is from 72 in. lbs. front band back off 1 7/8 turns, rear band back off 3 turns, hope this will help you. Good luck. .

Will get the specs in a few minutes...

Gotta go look. Been awhile since I was playing transmission guru.

Will post right back.

Its gotta be the 47re...

3500 HD 4x4 with camper, towing etc. Glanced at the door sticker, and didn't see it, but I believe its the 47re.

Adjust Bands

1. This is for a 47RE

2. Front Band

The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw is located on the left side of the transmission case above the manual valve and throttle valve levers.

(1) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut. Then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw threads if necessary.

(2) Thighten band adjusting screw to 72 in. lbs. , with a 3-in. extension and an appropriate Torx socket.

(3) Back off front band adjusting screw 1-7/8 turns.

(4) Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten locknut to 30 ft. lbs. torque.

3. Rear Band

(1) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns. Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever.

(2) Tighten adjusting screw to 72 in. lbs. torque.

(3) Back off adjusting screw 3 turns.

(4) Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut to 25 ft. lbs. torque.

Hope this helps straight from the manual.

Mike

Thanks, guys...

I will break into it tomorrow morning. May as well wait until light and warmth. I will probably be looking for a transmission shop in the L. A. area. I don't think I can make it back to Page, AZ on this one, but one can hope.

Does anyone know of good transmission shops or ATS authorized (not neccesary) shops around the Glendora/San Dimas-San Gabriel Valley or Santa Clarita Valley? I can nurse it about anywhere in the L. A. area, but the closer to those 2 valleys, the better.

Once again, a heartfelt 'Thank You' from me and mine for the quick responses. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to You and Yours!
