Well the day is approaching rapidly. I can't wait. I will be flying out to MI next fri to look at/buy a 92 D250 CC. I have asked questions before and got some good replies but I have a few more ??'s. Is there any way of telling if the turbo is in good working order?Boost patterns and what not?The owner replaced it recently and while he was in there he put on a 16cm housing. What sort of EGT's should i be seing with this setup? Is there any way to tell if the transmission is ok?It has a 98 NV4500. Is there a way to distinguish the NV4500 from the getrag? Also is there any way of looking at the oil,or exhaust pipe to tell if the truck is running good. Thanks again.

I think you are the closest person to me, geographically, I live in Kingston, NH, I work in Billerica, MA, did a lot of work down in Wareham, MA a while back. I am 3 days into my new truck '93 W250, auto trans(I love it) so I can't give you to much seat of the pants advise, there are pic's of the transmissions in the TDR,one of the advertiser's. I would just spend as much time checking all the details of the truck, you can get a pretty good feel for how well it has been maintained, there is always a certain ammount of risk when you buy an old vehicle that something unforeseen happens, if your buying from private party check service records and intervals... good luck

Chris,

If the fuel has not been turned up, you'll probably see EGT's max out at about 900 PRE-TURBO and boost around 18psi. If the EGT does go higher, don't forget that you shouldn't exceed 1250deg for too long though. You won't really be able to tell anything from looking at the oil, it turns black only a couple of hours after an oil change. Tailpipe will have a nice coating of soot inside it, this is normal. Let me know when you get back with the new beast, I'd like to drop by and have a look :D

Chris,

The original Getrag shift post comes up 4-6" closer to the firewall than a NV4500. The Getrag also has the name cast into one side of the housing.

Look, listen and feel to how the engine runs. Smoke while it is cold is OK. Once the engine is at its regular temp it should be smooth and smoke free.

Best Wishes and Happy Holidays to you!

Uh-huh... ... .

BTW, some blue or whitish blue smoke is normal on cold start.

If the truck has not been driven before you get to it, and it is cool out, turn on the key and watch the "wait to start" light on the dash. Depending on temps it will stay lit for few seconds, then go out. Start truck and watch alternator guage. Again, if cool/cold out the gauge should cycle up and down while the intake heaters are working. All this is normal.

Once the truck is at operating temps, there should be little or no smoke if the pump is untouched.

Check out the top of the injection pump (AFC housing) it should have a small metal cap inset on the top.

The high idle screw and the full fuel screw should also have tamper caps on them if it has been left alone.

Here's a link to a picture of that...

Good luck with your purchase. .
