Going to Yellowstone

The wife and I are heading west this late summer. We plan on going through Yellowstone. Are there any roads that we should avoid due to our camper size? Good reasonable rate campgrounds to stay at? We could be there up to 2 weeks if there is enough to keep us busy.

From where will you be traveling? I always recommend spending time in Colorado if time allows. Too much to list, but if interested, I can get back to you.

I went to West Yellowstone last summer and stayed at the KOA there west of town (about 6 miles). Spent about $50 a night but this campground was outstanding. We stayed there for three nights. Didn't pull through the park because my bride and kids went white water rafting one day so I went to Bozeman (Big Sky RV) and bought a new camper. Needless to say I am no longer allowed to visit RV or Dodge dealerships without adult supervision. But it is a very nice camper and my adult supervisor likes her new RV very well. Anyhow, we picked the new TT in Bozeman and headed east from there. West Yellowstone KOA was very nice though. Hope it helps.

We went to Yellowstone last year & stayed at Yellowstone/Grizzly RV Park. It cost around $40. 00 a night. It was also a great park & walking distance into town. You can find national forrest parks cheaper but they do not have hook ups. You can also go to www.tldirectory.com and check out campgrounds. I don't remember any problems with the roads for your size RV. Our is a 32ft and had no problems. Enjoy yourself, it is beautiful country and watch out for the bears.

I forgot to mention that Yellowstone/Grizzly RV Park is in West Yellowstone.

I like to spend some time in Jackson Hole, Wyo. and the Grand Tetons. While in Yellowstone, I stay at the Fishing Bridge Campground in the park. You will need reservations way ahead of time, like about now. I don't see any problem getting you 5er anywhere, Just get pull through camp sites. My wife and I will be there in August and then on to Alaska.

I took my adult supervisor and two of my kids to Yellowstone last summer. We stayed in Idaho, about 30 minutes west of Jackson Hole. There is a nice little town there with a decent RV park, good rates too. We used that as a base camp. I don't remember the name of the place, but I can look it up if you're interested. They are listed in the Trailer Life directory if you have one available. Since my adult supervisor actually stayed with me the whole time I wasn't allowed to buy any new trucks or trailers.

Someone help me out... . on the east side of Yellowstone there is a mountain pass that is 7 or 8% grade with lots of switch backs..... I've done it on our Goldwing 2 or 3 times... . each time on the motorcycle I've seen more than one pickup and trailer with brake problems from this road... . I've always stayed away from it with my pickup and 5er..... even with a great exhaust brake as I remember this is a 5 to 15 MPH road most of the way up and down.....



There's lot to see in Yellowstone, but 2 weeks seems a little long to me... . do go into the Tetons for a few days... the other posters are right, fishing bridge camp ground is great, and you'll have no problems with your trailer... .



And 40 to 50 a night to camp is about right..... don't know the rates in the park...



BTW you can get a years acess to the national parks. . for 50 bucks... a great deal... doesn't include camping fee's but access to all the parks... . on the way check out Mt. Rushmore..... Have a great trip... .

My wife and I like the rv park at fishing bridge also. Like Grizzly said you need reservations NOW if you are going to stay there. There are plenty of things to do for 2 weeks I think, but not everyone might agree on this. I met a person in Yellowstone once who said "Yellowstone is a state of mind, not a place". The rv park in question has full hookups, no soft side units because it's grizzly territory (sorry Grizzly), there are places to eat, groceries, fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing, bus tours, boat rides, and it's nice and cool at the altitude there. I can't say enough good things about this area or all of Yellowstone. Tom.

I think that road would be US 212, the Beartooth Highway out of Red Lodge Montana and into the NE entrance. The road over Dunraven pass is under construction also and may still be closed. Highway 14 out of Cody is not bad.

I've done both roads while on the harley. I guess my memory slipping. I do remember that going over the pass that August was pretty darn cold!

Fantastic ride on a bike, the wife and I have done several times. You're right could be a pretty cold ride even in summertime. Would be less fun pulling a big fiver over it.

We were there in 2002 and stay at Fishing Bridge and moved up north to a primtive site for 4 more days. We had no problem with our 5er. That grade on the east side is Salvian(sp) pass, had no trouble coming down. Do go to Jackson Hole and do eat at Bubba's it's the best,imo,in town. Plan on spendind an eveing in Jackson you won't regret it. Have a great time!!!!

That's right Sylvan Pass on highway 14 is not a problem. A more enjoyable ride than highway 212 with a big rv.

Hey, everyone thanks for the information, This is kind of overwhelming at the moment, I'll need some time to absorb everyones information plus a map to figure out those roads your all talking about.



We had planned on coming in the NE entrance and swinging down around by fishing bridge and around the whole loop over to old faithful and back up through the mountains of montana and idaho but if the pass is going to be that much of a problem maybe we'll detour to the north entrance. Maybe we'll have to see some of Idaho and Montana first then come in the north entrance and leave on the road that goes toward Cody.



Just got out the Atlas, Is that pass your talking about the one on the NE entrance leading to Tower Junction?
