Yes folks, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is going to offer the public a chance to own a piece of American military history. Eight thousand surplus 1911 and 1911A1 .45 ACP pistols will be offered starting September 4th. This is an opportunity on par with their sale of M1 Carbines in the 60's or their sale of M1C and D Garand sniper rifles in the 90's. There is still time to submit an order packet - orders will not be accepted until September 4th.
There will be some hoops to jump through, and they expect a lot of interest so a lottery system will be used to determine who actually gets to buy one. Chances like this don't come along often. There are some rare or particularly collectible pistols that will be offered on an auction basis (National Match pistols etc). There will be a lifetime one CMP pistol purchase limit per buyer.
