I know this is not a new thing but I figured that I'd share my results in case anyone is considering going fanless for the winter. Took the fan and shroud off a few days ago just to try it out. Get much faster warm up now. Engine temp stays normal, but will start to climb if truck doesn't move for over 15 minutes (may be an issue in traffic, but the chances of me getting stuck in traffic around here are slim to none). Also, my smoke is reduced, especially when the engine is cold. Seems to me like it's a good option for winter driving.

I was thinking about the same thing this morning. It went into the low 20's overnight. Just this Saturday, I put my Eric's winterguards on. Wonder if the combination of the winterguards and no fan would be too much and cause overheating. Could always take one or two of the guards off. In the winter, I don't tow often, so I could just pull off a couple guards when needed. Anything wierd about pulling the fan? Special tools? I have read that it should be kept standing up to keep the oil from leaking out.

The fan removal was pretty easy. The tricky part is holding the fan pulley. The fan nut is a left-hand thread and if you try to turn the fan clockwise the belt will slip. I took the belt off of the pulley and put on one of those rubber strap wrench things to hold the pulley. Gave the fan nut a tap on the right side with a screwdriver and hammer then grabbed it with a BIG set of channel-locks and it spun right off. I found it is much easier to just remove the shroud and fan at the same time, shroud comes off with two little clips on top.

FANLESS

I ran fanless all last winter, and plan to this winter too. I removed the nut last year by tapping it with a large punch and hammer. Once it was removed i made a "wrench" out of some flat stock,so now removal of the nut is a breeze. :D
