I WAS that is.

Yesterday I thought that need for a crewcab outweighed my love for my Cummins. So the wife and I went to the Ford dealership and took a look at a few 'stroked SRW CC's. They didn't have anything that had all the features that I needed, so I proceeded to spec one out for order.

After that was taken care of I told the salesman that I wanted to take one of the CC 6-speeds out for a spin because the wife had never ridden in one before. We tested a rather dressed out Lariat that looked nice until you sat in it. No matter how we adjusted the seats, we could hardly get comfortable. Shortly after that we were off and quickly noticed the lack of power that I'm used to with my Cummins.

I returned to the dealership and told the salesman about the lack luster acceleration that it had. He gave me a funny look and I told him that it was just me being spoiled with my HotPE giving me so much power. He laughed a little and asked me if I wanted to test drive a trade in that had a chip in it and dual exhaust kit. I said that would make a great comparison since mine had only a chip mod and straight pipe on it.

Well we took the 2000 F-350SC Super-Duty SRW 6-Speed for a spin w/dealer in the back seat (I guess he didn't trust us in this one) and took the same route that we'd taken before. I will admit that the chip and the exhaust made a difference but not as much as the HotPE alone did to my Cummins. We came to a hill and I got my wifes attention and told her that I was gonna punch it. I punched it and the lack of acceleration that we aren't used to, was enough for the wife to shake her head in disapointment.

Needless to say, the salesman was in disbelief when we told him to cancel our order.

That has been the closest I've come to screwing myself. The kids will just have to deal with the QuadCab from now on. My Ram is going nowhere soon.

Good story!

Over the years, I've found that nothing can cure a case of "new car fever" like a visit to the dealership. Usually it is the new prices or the dealer's attitude that drives me away. You're even luckier - you just realized you already OWNED a better truck, and got the special bonus that both you and wife agreed on it!

You should have taken the saleman for a ride in your REAL truck and shown him the difference!

It wouldn't have done any good to **** him off any more than he already was. But it would've been funny though.

I don't know if the 2001's have better seats in them than the 2000's I was looking at . . but the y2k quad cab was the most uncomfortable seating arrangement I ever experienced in this class truck.

Im not a large person . . 5'6 170 lbs fairly average . . when I adjusted the front seats for our comfort . . the legroom was barely enough for a 6year old to sit behind us.

The seatbelt wasn't intergrated in the seat and you needed to reach WAY back almost twisting your back to grab the belt. You were better off grabbing it on your way in.

Our rams have the comfort and fit and finish for the interior . . hands down. The crew cab would be a step down all the way around. Hey . . fomoco is pretty darn proud of that machine huh? How close to 40k were ya?

Wowzy,

Your test drive just goes to show that the Dodge Ram Cummins 5. 9L is THE engine & Chassis for a diesel optioned light truck.

Perspective buyers need not travel any further than the local Dodge Dealer. #ad

You won't find anything better elsewhere.

Their sales must be taking a hit because I was told that I would be paying $500 over invoice, just under 35K and that was the only talk about price that we did. Kinda wierd that I didn't have to fight about the price. It took the fun out of haggling.

Hey I was wondering, I thought there was some uproar over the 2001 trucks having more ponies. It felt like some of those ponies got sold for glue in the two trucks that I drove.

I've come to the conclusion that these are either gutless trucks or mine is a rocket ship and I'm spoiled with all this power under my A$$.

I too flirted with the Dark Side. Shortly before ordering my ETH, I was getting Crew Cab Cold Feet. I had to know. None matching my spec on the lot, but one that was "close" in functional equipment and loaded with bun toasting leather hides would do. I started it. Rested my hands upon a RUBBER WHEEL! Seems this conversion wasn't factory leather... THE ONLY WAY TO GET A LEATHER WRAPPED STEERING WHEEL? So this $42,000 4x2 crew cab had the steering wheel of a WORK TRUCK, yet blurwood trim?

The startup vibration just didn't seem to die down, but the idle settled so off I went. Thing seem responsive enough manuvering around and getting on the hwy. I then took the same farm road exit I took weeks before when I test drove an ETH. Checked the rear view, and brought her to a stop. Nailed it, sure it moved, but the whole dang firewall resonated in sympathy with the motor at high rpms AND THE GLOVE BOX WAS RATTLING!

Into "the turn" letting off, truck steered well enough given its length, and the front end's ocillation seemed more managble than the ETH, but only marginally so, they're 3/4 ton, nose heavy, under steering diesels after all.

Needless to say, I returned the over-optioned BUZZ-BOMB and faxed the specs for my ETH order the following tuesday.

The Quad Cab's doing just fine...

It is not fair in any way to compare a new tight engine that is stock to a Cummins with a PE on it and has a few thousand miles too. The one with the chip is still no competition for the PE. Stock to stock there is not a big difference, I have driven both. Not that I would ever own a PSD, but lets compare the same animal.

Good thread! This was my story too. Wanted the Crew Cab but when the Ford dealer let me test drive the truck to their Dodge store and get right in an ETH... see my signature.

Try a 3rd gear start in a PSD and tell me that the engines are comparable :p

Great story...
I have one too. I was burning some time recently and dropped into the GMC dealer to look at a Duramax. . curiosity

Well, they did not have any to show. I talked with the sales guy and quickly realized that he was new to the game. Before long he was asking more about diesels than telling me about his products. . #ad
#ad

Well, I could not resist and gave him a ride in the Green Monster.

First I zoomed around on just the DDI's and he said... "this is a diesel??" my favorite question! #ad

Then at a light I reached down and powered up the HotPE without telling him. #ad

"WOW" I got the desired result from him, before the soon to be replaced clutch started slipping. I can just imagine placing this guy in HVAC's truck... .

David...

LOL!

Making Believers out of them... =)

I like to lay off it until I hit the on ramp, (with firt time passengers), then I let the Boost and rpm's do the talking.

Never get tired of hearing heads hit the rear slider.
