I have a 90 Dodge diesel with a Banks sidewinder kit, BD fuel pin and 3200 rpm spring, pump turned up two turns.
I would like more air.
What is a good drop in air filter, the banks kit came with a K&N.
heard too much bad things about that filter

I seen the Banks website and it looks like they are a cone filter ? If so, they have a dry filter. Not sure if it will fit, but a phone call to them will give you an answer.

I have an S&B and didn't want to pay the price for their replaceable filters. Found aFe had a dry filter that was reusable and washable. Found one with measurements that would fit. On long trips, I have a spare and would wash clean the dirty one at a rest stop or hotel, then let it dry in the truck bed. They are a but pricey, but reusing them over and over has saved me money in the long run.

If it's a K&N oiled filter, then this has been a hot topic for years. Some say they don't filter well, others say they swear by them. I guess to each their own. But the people who have problems with them that I know of is their own doings. They tend to over oil them or don't let the oil dry on the material enough before starting the truck. The disadvantage I've seen was the oil sucked through the filter and was building up on the turbo blades. We cleaned my friends blades and solved his problem. He oiled less and let it sit a while from then on. If the oil collects on the blades long enough, normally it will end up with an irregular pattern, then it should throw the blades weight off balance and destroy the bearings. Not to good for a turbo spinning at that speed.

I ran a K&N for 8 years and never had a problem but I don't drive in "dusty" areas normally. That was always the complaint I heard that fine dust would make it thru the filter.

Yes, if you under oiled them it would let dust through, and if you over oiled them, then the oil will be on the turbo blades.

Either way, if a person service them right, they would be fine. I had one years ago and was sold on them. But I learned quickly about the amount of oil when servicing them and had no problems. One simple test was wiping the inner air tube to the turbo after the filter with a dark rag to see if there is dust or not, and the rag would be slightly greasy if to much oil from the prior service. That lets you know if your doing something wrong.

And going cross country, you never know the conditions you'll be in. I do this once or twice a year normally.

Open the stock air box with 2 row's of 2 in holes and run the stock filter .it will flow just fine on Air. Also I would Look into the New fuel Pin on the Market it's from The Hungry Diesel . Com fuel's better and much less smoke as with the BD pin's

I have a BHAF on a 90 motor i have a KN on a Geo Storm i bought for the wife , im not impressed 2 days to get the thing to dry what a hassel id never buy new not really worth it

On my 92 I used the bhaf and loved it. Way more air than ever needed. Had the K&N and I too found oily dirt in the intake and tossed it. Only dry from now on. Tim
