Replacement car parts have always been expensive from the dealer. Replacement lawn mower parts are expensive from the dealer. Replacement washing machine parts are expensive from the dealer. It is and always will be true. Popular Mechanics once "built" a Ford Escort in the 80's using dealer part prices. The car was then worth over $40,000.
And I still don't believe the story about the retired person causing all the money woes for GM or anyone else. I find it difficult to believe the pension plans went unfunded for 40 years and they are now just beginning to figure out how to pay for all the pensions. Those folks paid into the pensions many years ago. GTE for example had a very large, if not the largest, pension fund of any US company. They were offering huge early retirements for some folks just to make them retire and get it down. The money was locked and couldn't be touched by anyone. Which maybe explains why it got so large in the first place. No way for corporate big wigs to use it to buy summer homes and boats.
But maybe he's right. He's got some good arguable points to be heard.
