Joe, I really enjoyed your article on "rebuilding the G56 six-speed transmission" issue 71, pg. 106. In the summary, you gave specifics for recommendations for owners of this transmission. Can you expand on the recommendations, as per the oil and miles at recommended intervals?

The bearings and gears in the G56 are similar to those in the other manual transmissions that Dodge has used in our Turbo Diesels since 1994. Therefore, the same lubricants should be fine. The Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid that comes in tall yellow quart bottles is fine. I like Torco RTF and use it in all my manual transmissions, including automotive

Super T10 and Jerico transmissions. In my articles on the NV5600 (Issue 64, p. 85, Issue 67, p. 85) I discussed lubricants and change intervals. I prefer to change the lube a couple times early in the transmission's life, maybe at 5,000 to 10,000 mile intervals. Any mechanical device “breaks in” and releases metallic particles, and the transmission doesn't have a filter. After break in, I change lube about every 40,000 miles, more often if the truck is worked hard and the transmission gets hot doing so.
