well, i am known for my good deeds from time to time. on the 3oth i drove from Camp Pendleton CA to Eugene OR to surprise my mom and see them for the first time in a little over a year.

on the way at about midnight at one of the national parks on I-5 i stoped to help a couple of young girls out with a flat. yesterday a guys pathfinder FUBARD the rear end on the road, so i towed him off the road and into a parking space so he wouldnt get a ticket for impeeding traffic.

tomorrow in the AM i will be leaving for the return trip. i am going to take it slow and stop for EVERY vehicle that has the hazzards on and needs help. so long as there is a person with the vehicle then i will stop to help. if they dont want it, then i will move on, if they do want it, then i will do just that and help.

So... if ya are on I-5 south tomorrow and need help... maybe ill pull up in Storm and give ya a hand... .

i guess this is the wrong forum... sorry guys...

Right or wrong forum, who cares. You, my friend, are one helluva stand up guy! Thank you for everything you do for our country and everything else you do!

Right on!

One "type" who I won't stop to help are those who have the Calvin stickers that imply "pi$$ on everyone. " Although it is kind of funny to stop to help those with Chebies and Foads that have the "pi$$ on Dodge" stickers.

funny you say that... .

about a year ago i helped out a guy with a ram 3500 V10 who was overheating going through the pass on I-8 by the golden accorn casino. he and his kid/wife were in need of another truck for thier trailer... so i stoped... he had apiss on everyone sticker...

i do have to say though, he was a GREAT guy and even gave me 60. 00 to take his trailer 32 miles. offered beer on top of that, but im a hard stuff only guy. . LOL

glad to know other do the same....

I have stopped and helped countless people in need on the road and so far have never had a problem or been asked not to help. Long time ago I was driving home a guy with a brand new Ford Dually and a brand new 5th wheel lost the trailer in the middle of the road his hitch had failed and dropped on the truck then on the ground. I stopped and asked if I could assist and he and his GF were so shocked they could not even speak she was just crying (I would have been too) I was 5 minutes from home so I ran home grabbed my 5th wheel hitch came back and we spent 4 hours getting the trailer up onto my truck. The CHP officer only would stnad there and complain about how long it was taking and the tow companies in the area that came out would not even touch it as they did not have the right truck for it so we just did the best we could with blocks and thank god for Air bags on the truck we used a 6x6 that he had and used my truck as a lift to get the landing gear off of the ground. I drove it down to the local camping world so they could stay overnight and get the hitch fixed. Just one of many times helping out someone it seems so many people these days could care less about helping another person.

It's good to hear about others who offer help.

I once had a guy pull over to offer assistance to me, but I wasn't too excited. I have a 1973 GMC motorhome (front-wheel drive with the Olds Toronado front end). I was leaving Orange County, going to the Colorado River at Parker. It was my father's rig, and he still enjoys working on it.

As I left the house in the morning, I quickly found out that a rear wheel was loose. I pulled back in and found he didn't get the rear wheel bearings tight, either (his memory isn't what it was, so it was easily forgotten). No big deal, I was back on the road in an hour.

After driving about an hour, I heard the worst noise ever from the engine compartment. Making a long story short, I replaced the fried starter. My dad was able to find one and deliver it with my truck, in case I needed to abandon the vehicle, I would take my Jet Ski trailer. I was back on the road in about 6 hours.

After another two hours of driving, I lost the tread on one of the rear tandem tires. Since it still held air, I was able to pull off the highway onto a road that ran parallel to the highway. It was not a well-traveled road.

I pulled the spare off, and it was flat! I had just checked it a couple weeks before, and it had been holding good pressure for months! Fortunately, I had an air compressor I could use to pump it up. So while the small compressor was doing it's job, I was pulling off the bad tire.

A small S-10 truck pulled up in front of my MH. Again, keep in mind that people don't go on this road, and I wasn't visible from the highway. I was also alone. He sat there for a few minutes before getting out. I didn't think the situation warranted getting out my 9mm, so I continued pulling off the wheel with the 3-foot breaker bar. A somewhat young, punkish-looking guy gets out of the truck. If I were to stereo-type him, I thought nothing good was going to come of this. But all I could think of was how bad my day has gone, and I'm standing there with a 3-foot steel bar. If he wanted to cause any harm, he had better be far more motivated than my bad day was going! :-laf

Anyhow, he nicely asked if I needed any help (shortly after I made a fake call to the inside of the MH for a soda or something). I politely declined and thanked him. He went back to his truck, his girlfriend got out, and they started making out for a bit. That seemed odd, but I didn't let an eye leave them. They eventually got back in their truck and left.

I replaced the tire, and considered that as strike three. This trip wasn't meant to happen. I returned home. It was a 12-hour turn-around trip to nowhere. :{

Sometimes I think twice about helping out someone for various reasons, but I end up doing it anyway.

The girlfriend and I were riding dirt bikes and camping in Daniel Boone National Forest in KY during mid week and just as night was falling and we were relaxing by the fire, a guy pull up in a beat up 4x4 asking if we could pull his buddy out of a mud hole. I agreed right away, but as we climbed in the truck, it hit me that we were the only people around for miles, my truck was worth 5 times what his was, and this whole thing could be a trap and we could end up dead in the woods and not found for months. As we got to where his buddy was stuck, we could see he really was and we felt better about the whole thing. I ended up pulling him out without going over 1200 rpm and all his friends that were standing around were very grateful. They offered to pay as many people do, but I never take it. Do unto others they say.

I agree it is a risk to help I generally have the rule that if there is more than one "younger" male in the vehicle then they can take care of the problem themselves that I feel may be walking into something however ever since adding the lightbar to my truck people seem to think I am either a cop or a tow truck lol it was funny helped out at an accident the other day the officer pulled up and asked what department I was with :D I said I sold the lights and we got into a discussion of what he could do with his motor home...

And for those who are going to tell me that Red and Blue are illegal NO I never use red and blue on any public road the end caps are amber...

well i am sad to say, yet happy at the same time, that i was only able to stop twice.

the first time was for two younger guys who blew the transmission. they already had a tow truck on the way.

the second time a ford was pulling a dodge and a chevy? didnt get a good look at it on a tri axle car carrier... flat tire. i asked if they needed help and they didnt understand what i was saying... so i went about on my way. they were already half done anyway.

i do plan on getting a couple amber lights in the future... but money isnt laying around just yet for that.

next trip maybe ill get to help.

helping hand

A little different then the other stories. The other day as I was getting fuel, A class A motorhome miss-navigated the pumps a got hung up on steel safety poles. I watched two women and two not so mechanical men got out of the MH.

I always carry chains a straps for such ocasions. We attached the chains to frame rail and draged the MH sideways to clear the pumps.

Turns out they were filming a movie and asked if they could put us i the movie. So the whole thing is on video.

i have a 70k 25 foot long chain i always carry with me and 5 or 6 40k airforce chains. i was the wrecking crew when i was stationed in 29 palms till one day a guy i pulled off drove off without saying a single word to me. he ruined it for everybody else then. i started charging 5. 00 each person for a first time, 25 for a second or more.

if you were dumb enough to park in soft sand and get stuck more than once then you can afford 25 dollars. lol

ohh, i missed this part...

this is a hit or miss thing. i NEVER ask for money, nor will i imply that i want ANYTHING in return. if money is offered i say no thanks twice and refuse it in a polite way. on the third time so as to not offend them i just gently take it and stick it in my pocket without looking at how much. the entire time i make sure that they feel i dont need it at all. one time i went 30 miles on way out of my way, so was a bit glad to take the money to put back into the fuel tank while pulling the 32 foot trailer.

again, i try not to let them pay, but i dont push it too much... . i would make sure someone took whatever cash i could afford on me at the time.

Yup do the same thing sometimes refusing just does not work... . I helped a disabled lady on I-5 going over the grapevine she was pulling a 4 horse trailer with her Ford that was spewing trans fluid (fire on the mountain stop and go traffic) anyways we helped her out got the ford going again and she refused to not let me go unpaid well after 3 times of saying no thank you you said dam it your taking it I smiled and said ok you win
