Questions on Hypertherm Powermax 800 plasma cutter

Thanks on the IR. Duhhhhh. What was I thinking.

I was researching and found the Chicago Pneumatics CP7749 that has 725 ft/lbs torque but have never used anything from them.

I just want a good impact wrench again with plenty of torque to get the job done.

Techs here as a rule request the IR231 composite gun and/or the Thunder Gun for 1/2" duty.

A Thunder Gun in good working order with the proper supply of compressed air is extemely strong, as powerful as some 3/4" guns.

Good tools.

Mike. :)

Ya know I dont use my IR 1/2 any wear near what you Pro guy's do but im not overly impressed with it. I bought it about 2 years ago at Sears dont even know what model it is. Worked fine for quite awhile but seems to not be a strong as it once was. The reason I bought it was because my DAD"S IR after WHO KNOWS how many years took a dump and I thought it was good so why not.

You must oil them, or they lose power. I use a Chicago Pneumatic Composite 1/2" impact and love it! Very light, quiet and strong. For bigger nuts, I use an Air Cat 3/4". Weighs a ton, but is also the quietest air tool I own. When the Air Cat won't do it, I break out the Torque Multiplier "Nut Cracker". Uses a hand crank and gearing that multiplies your power X 58!!
Look it up on YouTube. Type in "torque multiplier". Works exactly as shown.

I have an old CP. I suppose it was made in the 70's.
It dont even have a model number on it.
Its about the size of a 3/4" drive but it's 1/2".

It wasn't an IR, but we had a gun that size at a steel mill I worked at for a while. We lifted it into place with an overhead gantry crane. It had 4 bars coming out of so you could get a bunch of guys on it to hold it in place, or you could try to pin it against something (like a mill housing, which is pretty much all we used this for). It was eventually replaced with a Hytorc (all hydraulic).

IR guns are good. The composites are nice but don't have quite the multi-decade life of the heavy all metal ones..... but they are much lighter and easier to work with.

IR rebranded guns (Mac, Matco, Craftsman, etc) are good deals to be had sometimes, too.

Snap-on's new magnesium guns are nice... but, you pay a large price for that.

I have many brands of air tools and my most reliable impact guns have been IR's of some sort, whether IR branded or relabeled.

Price on IR 599A1

If I can find one around here, I will look at the Thunder Gun. There is a new CP that has 750 ft/lbs of torque but again, hard to find.

Thunder Gun it is. Northern Tool had them cheaper than Amazon. Plus, I had a $20 off card so that was even better.

Reviews were good. Out of 50 I read, 48 were 5 stars.

Thanks, guys.
