Just like many of you, I have put a substantial investment in my truck. I want to protect it. Are there any security systems that you people can recommend? I have a window unit from my last alarm. But I want something that locks the doors, activates my window unit, disables the starter, glass sensor, etc. I also want a system that if the vehicle is stolen, I can disable it remotely. I know this sounds like alot, but there is a huge knowledge base in you people so I hope you can help me out.
Did I mention that I want the unit to be as "plug-n-go" as possible. By that I mean something that I can just plug into the stock wiring harness. I can do wiring, I'm just lazy. Thanks for the help.

p. s. Lo-Jack won't work around here. Not unless you're trying to catch a rogue cow.

Ungo and AutoPage work pretty well with lots of options. Go to a high end stereo shop (not circuit city) and see what they have. I don't think you will find an alarm that will just plug in that will do everything you want.

Don't ever get an ALPINE (mines a big ol' POS). When I got it they said they'd only have to hook up 2-3 wires. Later I found out they whacked up about 15 and used wire nuts #ad

It seems to me the best "security system" is one that makes it difficult enough to move the truck that the thief will move on to an easier one. Many alarm systems make a lot of noise or such and that goes on so commonly that it is generally ignored. My system won't prevent theft of accesories, but I hope it will discourage the would be thief enough that he will give up. It cost me under $7. A push button momentary contact switch wired into the starter relay wire. Truck won't crank unless the button is held down, and rewiring under the dash won't help as the wire is cut in under the hood. Also wired in a togle switch under the hood, which when thrown restores original operation in case it is ever necessary to leave it at a dealer, or car valet parking etc.
Made a trip to Arizona with a friend with a late model other brand last Feb. his truck had a fancy security system that blew the horn and flashed lights on and off when the truck was "fooled with". The system repeatedly went off on its own at unpredictable times so often that finally he got under the hood with wire cutters and tore it out to get some peace.

That's why you need to get it installed by a professional who knows what he is doing. My alarm NEVER false alarms unless I lay on my keys wrong and press the panic button. You have to hit the truck pretty hard to make it chirp, and then again to make it go off. A cat deffinately isn't going to do it, but if you break the window it will go off. I also have a backup battery incase they disconnect the main it will still go off. The more sirens you can add the better. If you have one under the seat, the thiefs can't stand to stay in there to steal anything.

Thanks for the responses. I am also entertaining the idea of using the cigarette lighter pushbutton idea that was posted earlier. As for having a "professional" do the wiring, absolutely not! I had that done to my old fjord and what an abortion. I will never have a "professional" do any wiring to any product that I own ever again. I am pretty good at wiring (if I do say so myself), but I am just lazy. I want to do it once and never have to do it again.
As for good alarms, I am looking at the ungo, compustar, on-guard (alpine) or something similar. Please keep the ideas coming. Thanks.

I had Alpine's best alarm system (at the time) on my last truck and it worked very well. No problems in over four years and close to 80k mi.

I elected to go with the Mopar EVS II modular alarm system on my Ram. I had it installed by the dealer prior to delivery to me, along with all the EVS II accessory options. I've been very pleased with this system so far (2. 1 years and 37k mi. ). The neat thing about the EVS II system is that it is almost totally modular. All connections are made using factory connectors, similar to the way the VA CPC installs... except for one wire (can't remember what it's for now). Another plus about the EVS II is that if you have the DC extended warranty AND you had the dealer install it, the alarm system is covered for the entire duration of your extended warranty. And believe me, with the modifications I've made to my Ram, that's about all that could still be covered under my extended warranty. LOL

B. O. M. B. and loving it! (No offense Tom #ad
