My brother in laws brother in law just bought a new '06 4-door Dodge, and is a retired diesel mechanic. He's a past TDR member, but never active online and is very interested in obtaining detailed info on the new fuel setup, since it's so different than the '99 he traded off - any help?

TIA!

The DC Tech Authority website sells all the manuals as well as the course materials for the DC technicians. Manuals are pretty in depth in layman's terms and give tons of trouble shooting info (basic as well as involving the DC DRB3 scan tool or even a scope) that one can do before going into the dealership and going through the painful experience of "can't duplicate the problem" due to incompetent techs. I have the manual w/ CD ROM for my '03. It was about $3xx, but paid for itself in a week! If your BIL BIL is a retired diesel mechanic this would defintely complement his trouble shooting skills! I don't know if the '06 manuals are out yet though... Hope this helps

Actually, he's more interested in a decent description of how the system works, where exactly the various components - LP, high pressure pump, etc. - are located, and how they are designed to function as a system.

It's more for his general education on the overall function and general maintenance than for in-depth repair if needed - he's long since retired, and would use the warranty for actual repairs - he just wants to be brought up to speed on system changes as compared to his '99.

When he was actually employed as a diesel mechanic about 15 years back, all this stuff was purely mechanical... ;) :D

Some sort of fuel system overview, hopefully with illustrations identifying various major components and their location would be appreciated...

He should be able to find what he is looking for here:

I also did some poking around at Bosch and found this book-

Diesel Fuel Injection System Common Rail

-Technical Instruction Booklet Price $14. 00

9 in stock

Bosch No. 1 987 722 142 Year(s) 2005

ISBN No. 3-86522-030-4 Language English

This booklet presents the design and operating concept of common rail systems and documents how this fuel injection system has evolved since its market launch in 1997. It also describes in detail the main components of the common rail system. The heart of the system is the injector, of which there are two types: the solenoid valve injector and the new piezo-inline injector introduced in 2004. This booklet will explain their operating concepts and the advantages of piezo technology. Other topics include the description of the electronic diesel control (EDC) and fault diagnostics. (Color, 94 pages)
