Any one have any experience with the 305/70R16 Goodyear Wrangler ATS tires. The Kelly's have about had it and the goodyears look god, but have heard good and bad about them. Looking for a fello Diesel owner with experience with these tires for an honest opinion

Hi Lawdog,
I just traded them in on Goodyear MT/R. The ATS tires are a soft tread and sidewall. They have great traction and are a smooth ride. I had only 6000 miles on them when I traded them in. Very fast wearing tire with the weight of our trucks. The MT/R are more agressive of a tread design which correlates to tire noise. The MT/Rs have 3ply sidewall and a different rubber compound than the ATS.
First thing I noticed upon driving away from the tire store was the stability of the tires. I have better steering response, cornering and ride. Will have to see how the tires will wear. I am running 315/75R16 in the MT/R. I did have 305/70R16 ATS. JMOP.

HO,

I was strongly considering a set of the ATS's too, but it is good to get some real world feedback from a fellow CTD owner.

They must really not be that good if you decided to get rid of them after only 6000 miles. They were wearing pretty fast huh? How many miles do you think they would have lasted?

Thanks for the great info,
Ryan

My best advise would be to avoid ANY TIRE that says Goodyear on it! They make a wonderful race tire. . but their street tires suck! They are: expensive, noisy, rough-riding, poor handling, short-lived and terrible in the rain. Buy Yokohama's, Bridgestone, Sumitomo, Michelin, etc... these tires come round and stay round. Mater of fact, I rode in an Expedition just today with Wranglers on it... after 14,000miles they are out of round, scalloped badly, noisey, rough... blah-blah. This is my opinion from my years of experiences.

Cooker,
I would not even want to speculate on approximate mileage, not very good, is all I can say. I can say to date the best tire I have ran so far is the BFGoodrich A/T 285/75R16, they still had a fair amount of tread at 50k miles. Quite a few of them loaded. I went with these because BFG did not have there Mud T/A in the size I wanted and the wife wanted a more aggresive tread pattern than the BFG A/T. BFG also has made all there dealers sell within a few dollars of each other. I saved about 40 dollars a tire going with Goodyear. Almost a tire for free. I bought them at Discount Tire, had good luck with them #ad

Here you go, honest opinion. Got mine at 70K. Now 75K. Hardly any wear, just like my BFG AT's that I ran for 60K. The stock Goodyears only lasted 10K. I am running 45 psi front and 30 psi rear unloaded. Stability is fine. I plan on rotating them every 9000 miles, with each fuel filter change, just like my BFG's. Rotating will make any tire live longer. My stock Goodyears wore out because the dealer aired them up to 50 psi front and rear. They wore right down the center. Airing them down when given proper instruction prolonged the end, but the damage was already done. The Goodyear ATS's have a better treadwear than the BFG's did. No noise at all, and nice large channels for water to pass thru.

I have never run the goodyears, but a good friend of mine that has always had PSD's runs nothing but that tire. He refuses to change tires (he also refuses to change trucks though too #ad
), they get decent treadwear, very little road noise, and a pretty nice ride. I could not tell any difference in tire ride between those and my BFG 285's, but I can tell you that he was stuck in some pretty thick crud once, and I went in with the BFG AT's and yanked him out... He does seem to go through tires fairly quickly, so I am speculative about them reaching 40-50K miles.
