Thanks TDR members. I had lived with the dreaded belt "chirp" for nearly two years. Thanks to a recent thread, I found the solution (Goodyear Gatorback), part number and source for 1/2 price purchase, as well as a tip for changing the belt. Took about 5 minutes this morning, and "No more Chirp. " Hooray!! Now the obvious question. Why don't they install this belt at the factory? Guess it's asking too much for a truck that only costs $40K!

I installed the Gatorback and it fixed the chirp for about a month. It now chirps as before.

Hey, learn to love it, it's a Cummins extra that you didn't have to pay for.

LOL, as Bill Gates would say; it's not a bug..... it's a feature!

Thanks Guys

I drive a '99 4x4 shortbed (with 23600 miles on the clock) and have been watching the threads regarding the serpentine belt changeout. I too, like some, have become tired of "the chirp". However I noted that "the chirp" went away after installing the Horton fan. :D

However, I decided to change out the belt anyway. After removing the belt, I found 3 perpendicular cracks down to the backing! This on a belt with only 23K on it.

Anyway, I just wanted to say "THANKS" for the input:D I probably wouldn't have been concerned until I read the threads.

Great bunch of folks

If you got rid of the engine stop anunciator, how are you going to be able to tell when it shuts down???????

Somehow I have never had much of a problem knowing when my Cummins is running or not. In fact the last time we went on vacation, we rented an econobox car. We got in and I started the car while I adjusted the mirrors, etc. The wife said, "Come on and start the car; it's hot in here. " At that, I "started" it a second time, embarrassing myself by grinding the starter. Guess all my future vehicles will have to be equipped with a Cummins now. Good excuse!!:D
