I know I saw something here before on this , but as usual my search on the matter turned up nothing. My front tires have cracks developing about 1/2 inch out from the bead, and I am not talking your normal dry rot cracks either , one is pretty huge , going to go by Goodyear sometime this week and see what they have to say . Maybe I'll try to post a picture or two of them tomorrow, there are several spots that look like they will crack/ split also! Whats going on here??

Hi Mark,

My wifes dually had the same problem. I had cracks all the way around the front tires. 2 inches out from bead/rim. I bought the General tires. Got them for 153 bucks each. Let me know what Goodyear says... ... ?

I'm getting the 2nd set put on mine in the morn. , 1st set got 84K on them, this set has 80K+. I hope by the time these go bad Michelin will be out with the 235x80xR17's, I got 110K+ out of them on my 00. I know, its a PITA, but its not bad mileage, I've never had one blow out on me, nor even a flat. I like the tire, but Goodyear isn't building a good carcass on them.

I grew up around Goodyear... my father retired with them after 33 years... . I hate to see the problems they are having now... . just seems that the quality they once had, is no longer evident... I have Michelin's on my '03 because that's what it came with... . absolutley no complaint about the Michelins..... sorry this doesn't add anthing helpful, just felt like making a small commentary.....

I guess seeing the name "GOODYEAR" made me realize that even though it's been 7 years since he passed away, I still miss him... sorry.....

Update....

Finally made it to Goodyear today after work, they will prorate the 2 front tires with the cracks (will cost me $100 they say for both). They say the cracks (rips) were caused by the "flexing action" of the tires during steering with all that weight on them and the back tires ( with cracks also) but no rips, will not tear up like fronts did because they remain in a straight ahead direction!? WTF  So for now I'll stay with the GSA's and hope by the time another one screws up someone will make a better tire. These GSA's were made the 36 th week of 2002 and only have 42K miles on them. :(

Did you mention to them that steering tires are expected to turn and that they weren't over the maximum weight capacity of the tire?

Tell GoodYear that all six of mine have done it, twice! Can't get any satisfaction from any GoodYear dealers around here so I just ran them. Just put another set on today. Never had a flat or blowout, 68k on first set, 77k on second. I think it is just the skin, nothing in the cord that I could see when they were pulled off. Could have run them longer, but we have some DOT officers around here that are pretty tough on short tread tires. Not worth the hassle so I changed them.

No, they did not prorate the tires, that is why I went to Discount Tires this time. Like I said, I've had two sets, both did it. The tread was still legal but I run hotshot and having the DOT measure it whenever I go through weigh stations wasn't worth the hassle. Like I said in my earlier post, I believe it is only the skin, it doesn't seem to go into the cord.
